About us

Apothékary started with our founder, Shizu Okusa, and her family’s traditional Japanese approach to healing — using nature as medicine instead of over-the-counter fixes. In many Eastern cultures, traditional medicine in the form of plants and herb has been used for centuries to address the root cause of common ailments. That’s exactly what we strive to do here at Apothékary - we’re here to not just treat the symptom, but get to the root cause of your wellness woes. The demands of our modern life disconnect us from our inherent state of being. At times, we can forget what it feels like to live in harmony with the natural world. Ancient healing traditions take cues from nature to holistically support our mind, body, and spirit. With daily practice, we’re reminded of what harmony feels like and we wonder how we ever lived without it. Apothékary is on a mission to give ancient, plant-based healing traditions new life—so that you can live a more balanced one. All of our Signature Formulas are thoughtfully formulated by our in-house Clinical Herbalists, pulling from traditional medicine modalities like Japanese Kampo, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and American herbalism. The result is simple yet effective herbal remedies with tradition and modern science in mind. Each formula contains herbs from local and global farmers with ingredients that are non-GMO, gluten-free, and contain no added sugar, fillers, or additives. In essence, they’re nature’s best remedies—plain and simple. And the best part is, they actually work to address the root cause instead of masking the symptoms.     As a perpetual student of leadership styles, this article in Inc. Magazine by Kim Jao caught my eye. In it, Jao chronicles the most important lessons that seven leading entrepreneurs learned during their time in business schools. Each of the lessons is worth the price of admission itself, but I was particularly taken with was, “Work for your eulogy values” as articulated by Apothékary™ Founder and CEO Shizu Okusa. Her point, which made me stop and think about how I lead, is that you should always work in such a way that people will be able to identify at your funeral - the values that drove your life. In other words, make sure you’re leaving the legacy you want to leave with each and every business decision you make. Inspired by powerful podcasts about the perils of alcohol by Rich Roll, Andrew Huberman, and Liz Moody, I embarked on Dry January with curiosity and enthusiasm.⁠ ⁠ “Dry January” ended up turning into “Dry January through May 14th,” because after I learned that Taylor Swift stopped drinking for her Eras Tour, I decided I did not want to drink during my Good Energy book tour launch (which was my version of Eras Tour, after all! 😆). My partner was incredibly kind and willing to join me on this journey, which made it a LOT more fun. Then, once May 14th hit, we both had no strong interest in drinking, so we didn’t. Now, it’s August, and in many ways alcohol is just no longer an interest. I’ve sort of… forgotten about it 🤯 .
