About us
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 420 counties across the Appalachian Region. ARC’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the Region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. Established by an act of Congress in 1965, ARC has been working directly with federal, state and local partners to build a sustainable economic future for the Region. In fiscal year 2015, ARC approved more than $101 million in funding for 466 nonhighway projects in the Region. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastation of Hurricane Helene, including Appalachians across at least seven states. We have reached out to state partners offering our support and stand ready to assist as they recover and rebuild. This has already been said by many of our partners, but it's worth saying again: the resilience, compassion and community care shown by Appalachians – especially in times of crisis – will help the region rise up stronger than before. We saw this during the Eastern Kentucky flooding in 2022 and are already seeing it again. Below we've listed emergency resources, updates and ways to support the five most-impacted Appalachian states, including two response funds from our partners. We'll share more resources as they become available.
