About us

The Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky, Inc., known as “AppalReD Legal Aid,” is a private non-profit law firm. AppalReD offers free civil legal help to eligible low-income people in 37 counties of the Appalachian Mountains and rolling hills of eastern and south-central Kentucky, a region home to more than 200,000 people living in poverty. AppalReD focuses on legal problems that affect our clients’ basic needs for food, shelter, income, personal safety from all forms of abuse, and safety and stability for children and the elderly. AppalReD does not handle criminal matters. The people who work with AppalReD are committed to making a difference and ending the effects of poverty in the lives of our clients. Since its 1970 founding by its first Executive Director, John Rosenberg, a legendary pioneer in Appalachian poverty law, AppalReD’s tradition of excellence has attracted young attorneys and legal workers from all over the U.S., and AppalReD’s intensive training programs and hands-on experience have produced leaders who have gone forward to change the face of life in Kentucky and the nation. Today, AppalReD operates six local law offices across the region. Each covers a defined service area and is staffed by attorneys, paralegals, and legal secretaries with a high degree of specialized training in the legal matters we handle. Our experts in housing law, consumer law, family law, domestic violence, and public benefits do more than serve our clients. Annually, our attorneys and support staff host trainings open to private attorneys and legal staff, like our well-known, annual Domestic Violence Conference. AppalReD engages in outreach efforts, attending community events and making contact with people to learn more about what is going on in the area. AppalReD offers a unique Volunteer Lawyers Program, and our Low Income Tax Clinic stretches to provide help with income tax problems to residents of 86 Kentucky counties.

Updates

  • Join AppalReD Legal Aid's Disaster Response Team and Pro Bono Program on April 4 as we offer a free, three-hour CLE. Presenters are attorneys who have worked at the forefront of Kentucky’s most recent natural disasters. Attorneys will feel confident to volunteer and effectively represent clients with issues arising from the February 2025 flooding or other natural disasters their communities may face. Attorneys will receive an overview of typical legal issues relating to natural disasters and learn more about FEMA appeals and how attorneys can best represent their clients in navigating these issues while trying to recover.  Kentucky Bar Association Kentucky Legal Aid Legal Aid of the Bluegrass Legal Aid Society

  • Flood survivors facing denied FEMA claims, landlord-tenant disputes, lost documents, contractor scams, or other disaster-related legal issues can call AppalReD’s Disaster Legal Services Intake Hotline at 1-844-478-0099 for free legal assistance. Survivors can also visit an AppalReD office, connect with staff at Disaster Resource Centers, or leave a message for a Disaster Team member to return their call. To meet the overwhelming legal needs in the wake of this disaster, AppalReD is actively recruiting and training volunteer attorneys. Lawyers can sign up at ardfky.org/probono to provide pro bono assistance in person at Disaster Resource Centers, remotely through online clinics, or to take case referrals. • Every year we are so fortunate to have incredible law students join us--for Fall and Spring Break trips, as volunteers to earn their pro bono service credit, and as summer fellows and interns. Law students gain valuable experience and exposure to law and the issues impacting Appalachia. They make a big difference for low-income people. And whether they spend a week with us, a semester, or a summer, they're part of a dynamic family of AppalReD Legal Aid alumni who serve in leadership positions in legal aid, government, non-profits, and universities across the U.S. Please reach out or fill out a volunteer application on our website. We'd love to have you! #lawstudentlife #summerlawstudents #internship #community #probono #lawschool #LegalAid

  • Project Renew is more than providing legal help to low-income people impacted by the opioid crisis. It's about imagining a new way forward for those in recovery and our communities and ensuring that barriers don't get in the way of healing.

  • We are thrilled to celebrate Floyd County being officially designated as a Recovery Ready Community! This recognition highlights the incredible efforts of our community to support individuals suffering from substance use disorder. Senior Attorney Casey Michalovic, who helped prepare the application, was honored to join Governor Andy Beshear and other local leaders for the announcement. Access to civil legal aid is a crucial part of recovery—whether it's addressing housing stability, removing employment barriers, or stabilizing families. We’re proud to stand alongside so many amazing partners dedicated to making recovery possible for everyone. #TeamKY #recoveryready #recoveryispossible #FloydCounty #LegalAid

  • On 12/19 Governor Andy Beshear announced that three new counties (Knott, Lawrence, and Floyd) are being recognized as Recovery Ready Communities for their efforts. Floyd County is an excellent example of what can happen when local leaders, community organizations, and individuals come together to support those in recovery. As Judge Tyler Green said, "How do we do it? We do it by working together to take care of our fellow Floyd Countians." AppalReD Legal Aid senior attorney Casey Michalovic echoed just how valuable partnerships are when it comes to creating a strong recovery ecosystem. Michalovic was involved with the Recovery Ready application for Floyd County as part of her senior attorney project. Michalovic serves formerly incarcerated individuals and those in recovery by providing civil legal help that leads to stable housing and employment. #teamky #legalaid #recovery #teamwork #projectrenew
