Do we rely too much on automation? Applause's Adonis Celestine spoke this morning at AutomationSTAR Vienna on how automation should form just one part of a holistic testing strategy, as well as the sort of metrics quality engineers should be using to measure real impact. Read more on his feed.
It was great to speak at AutomationSTAR Conference in Vienna this morning. Technology is there to help humans. Fitness trackers encourage us to be more active, robot hoovers make cleaning the house easier and self-driving cars are taking many risk factors out of driving. However, many technological advancements also mean humans are becoming deskilled at certain tasks. People are so dependent on satellite navigation that they no longer have very good senses of direction, parking sensors mean drivers have little confidence reversing and digital communication has left many people with poor writing abilities. The same is true of software testing. Advances in automation mean quality engineers now have a very fast way to push products and features to production. But it also means they are losing critical analysis skills. Quality engineers are spending less time thinking about edge cases and usability, focusing more on getting products to production than on whether the product is really ready for it. I like to call this the 'automation bias'. Always a pleasure to catch up with other speakers and customers. Thank you to everyone who attended my talk. Please message me if there were any questions you didn't get to ask. #DigitalQuality #Automation
