According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 760,000 people have died since 1999 from a drug overdose. Nearly 75 percent of drug overdose deaths in 2021 involved an opioid. Opioids are highly addictive substances and include illegal drugs like heroin, as well as powerful prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine and fentanyl – all of which have left a devastating impact on our communities.
