This month in 1897, Cambridge professor J.J. Thomson published his discovery of the electron. Building on earlier experiments, Thomson conducted a series of tests that led him to conclude that cathode rays were made up of negatively charged particles — what we now know as electrons. His work laid the foundation for modern atomic theory and countless technologies we use today, from computers to communication systems. There could be good news when it comes to beating treatment-resistant cancers. It’s called FLASH radiation therapy and a new paper in Reviews of Modern Physics details its success in preclinical trials and evaluates FLASH’s potential to enter the clinical domain safely. FLASH delivers ultra-high doses of radiation to localized tumors 1,000 times faster than conventional methods.
