I had an incredible experience filled with great learning and open discourse at the NIHR UCLH CRF held at the Wellcome Trust. The event, on Friday 11 October 2024, included presentations on cancer, neurology, and dementia research trials, as well as breakout sessions where we had the opportunity to talk in small groups about what we should be doing to improve the diversity of participants taking part in research. The event underscored the critical importance of diversity at all levels in clinical trials. Diverse perspectives not only enhance the quality of research but also ensure that the benefits of medical advancements are accessible to all communities. It’s essential to champion inclusivity and representation, not just within our teams, but at the board level as well. Leadership diversity drives meaningful change and innovation across the entire organisation. A special highlight was ✏️ Katie Chappell l, whose live drawing skills perfectly captured the mood of the room and added a unique, engaging element to the day Let’s continue to advocate for diversity in every aspect of our work! 💡🌍 #clinicaltrials #diversity

I attended the Jawdrop Fireside event Imperial College London's White City Campus yesterday. The event brought together public health practitioners, vaccines makers, academics as well as having representation from the UK life sciences sector. The engaging panels and insightful conversations highlighted innovative strategies to enhance vaccine uptake and clinical research participation, emphasizing the importance of building strong community relationships. This event truly highlighted the power of collaboration and TRUST in driving forward public health initiatives. A big thank you to all the speakers and organisers for such a thought-provoking and impactful event! Excited to see the positive changes this will bring to our field. 🚀 #LifeSciences #PublicHealth #Innovation #TrustInScience #JawdropFireside

Breaking the news about a cancer diagnosis is never easy, and it becomes even more challenging when cultural sensitivities are involved. In the South East Asian community, where health issues can often be a subject of privacy and not openly discussed, it’s especially tough. But it’s important to have these conversations with honesty and care, ensuring that our children are informed and supported through this journey.

July is Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Month (EMCAM). I was proud and honored to participate in a panel where we shared our experiences with breast cancer as South Asian women, emphasising the importance of breast awareness, screening, and dispelling myths and taboos. Madiha Sajid did a fantastic job as our facilitator. Many thanks to my fellow panelists, Sakoon Through Cancer and @Dr. Sarah Ali, for sharing their personal stories. Manveet Basra Lordi Anne Tickell thank you so much for organising and making the inaugural event so special. Breast Cancer Now helps to raise awareness for a cancer that will affect 1 in 7 women in the United Kingdom during their lifetime. Breast cancer is far more common in white women. Data clearly shows that black, Asian and minority women from less affluent backgrounds are less aware of the signs and symptoms, do not attend screenings and are less likely to check their breasts, and as a consequence present later where treatment options are limited, resulting in poorer outcomes. So please encourage everyone to get into the habit of regularly checking their breasts Breast Cancer Now Breast Cancer Trials

The panel (Sakoon Through Cancer, Jastinder (Jay) Tatla and Dr Sarah Ali, facilitated by Madiha Sajid) shared their experiences of being diagnosed with breast cancer, the challenges they faced, as well as how they found hope and support. Thank you to everyone who attended in person.

Approximately 55,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year in the United Kingdom. Working in cancer research and clinical trials took on a personal meaning when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018. It was during my treatment journey I realised not everyone possesses the same level of knowledge about cancer. As an Asian female, I discovered the taboos that existed culturally that I had never been aware of. These taboos have led to later diagnoses and delays in therapeutic intervention. My way of giving back is to ensure women know what they need to look for, that cancer is not a death sentence, how to deal with the side effects, and how to garner support from their community rather than isolation. At AquaClinical we are very aware that despite the UK’s diverse population, clinical trials lack participant diversity. Unrepresentative data adversely affects the integrity and efficacy of trial results, leading to discriminatory treatments. Our aim is to help change this in any way or form.  I am so proud to help Breast Cancer Now raise awareness in Southeast Asian female community.
