It almost looks like you could take a stroll down this path…except you’d sink. This is a creek that is fully covered by invasive Salvinia minima, commonly known as water spangles or common salvinia. It is a small, free-floating aquatic fern native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas …but has become an invasive species in many parts of the world…including here in Florida. It forms dense mats on the water’s surface, which can quickly cover large areas of still or slow-moving water, spreads aggressively - outcompeting native vegetation and reducing oxygen levels in the water, which is harmful to fish and other aquatic organisms. Thick mats block sunlight, limiting the growth of submerged plants and disrupting the aquatic ecosystem. #aquastemconsulting #environmentalconsulting #environmentalscience #invasionecology #invasivespecies #aquaticplants #ecology #safety

Broadleaf arrowhead is a native aquatic plant that tolerates wide ranges of water fluctuation, high P, and hard water.
