Aquatic Life Institute joined the Pelagic Advisory Council (Pelagic AC) in 2023, and we are seeing encouraging progress with fish welfare being prioritized in pelagic #fisheries. This marks a significant positive shift for the industry, as focusing on #animalwelfare paves the way for a more #sustainable future—one rooted in compassionate practices that benefit the planet, humans, and animals. "While we are in the early stages of addressing fish welfare, it is clear that this issue resonates with consumers and policymakers alike. Ensuring the humane treatment of fish not only meets societal expectations but also supports the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry." - Esben Sverdrup - Jensen https://lnkd.in/epyPsn_J

Director of the Aquatic Animal Alliance, Catalina Lopez, attended the Latin American Aquaculture congress in Medellin a few weeks ago, where she presented on environmental enrichment as a key intervention to improve aquatic animal welfare in farms. It was highly encouraging to see industry stakeholders, academics and government officials interested in including #animalwelfare in their operations and policies. The event was an incredible opportunity to connect with experts, innovators, and passionate professionals dedicated to advancing sustainable aquaculture in the region. We hope that future editions of the event place even greater emphasis on aquatic animal welfare.

On September 27th, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the California Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) Act into law. 🐙 In the past couple of weeks, the media has celebrated the recent victory for #octopuses in California after several animal advocacy organizations came together to advocate for the bill. Another thank you to all of the organizations involved in this positive development including Animal Legal Defense Fund and Social Compassion in Legislation! Some of the media coverage that this major victory received include stories from Los Angeles Times, World Animal News, and Agri-Pulse Communications. https://lnkd.in/gsJyAbAM

Yesterday, Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) published the third edition of the Aquaculture Certification Schemes Benchmark. This is a tool that analyzes current #AnimalWelfare standards within the primary farming standards of 8 global seafood certification schemes and 1 international ratings agency. 🐟 The benchmark promotes a competitive environment among certifying bodies, encouraging them to strive for higher scores through implementing more rigorous welfare requirements in #aquaculture practices. As part of ALI's Corporate Initiative, we collaborate with global retailers to integrate high-welfare standards into their seafood procurement policies. This year, we’ve also developed a complementary summary report, offering guidance on how corporations can leverage the benchmark to make more informed and responsible sourcing decisions ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eyWSpRaS

Octopuses belong to the wild. It is impossible to meet their needs in intensive farming conditions so this #WorldOctopusDay, we've teamed up with AnimaNaturalis Internacional, Compassion in World Farming and Aquatic Life Institute to call for octopus farming to be banned before it ever starts. #StopOctopusFarming

🐙Celebrating World Octopus Day!🐙 Today, we honor the #octopus—a highly intelligent, sentient being, and true icon of the ocean. There is increasing discussion and interest around commercial #OctopusFarming. These animals are particularly unsuited for captivity due to their intelligence, delicate physiology, and carnivorous diet. Farming them not only raises serious ethical concerns but would also create an industry that’s unsustainable and harmful for the environment and public health. Now is a critical moment to intervene and prevent this harmful practice from taking hold, which is why Aquatic Life Institute launched a global campaign to #BanOctopusFarming. Through this campaign, we pursue legislative bans, as well as prohibitions in seafood certification schemes and corporate policies. Here are just a few of the major victories we've seen after launching this campaign: ✅ Aquatic Life Institute's 3rd annual Aquaculture Certification Schemes Benchmark (launched today!) recognizes commitments from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Soil Association to prohibit the certification of any farmed octopus products. The two certifiers join RSPCA and Friend of the Sea, who took a stance against the harmful practice last year. ⚖️ Washington State and California have both enacted bans on octopus farming, setting a powerful precedent. 🏛️ US senators have introduced a federal bill which would ban commercial octopus farming and the importation of commercially farmed octopus across the country. But there’s more to be done. Join us in the fight to secure a global ban and protect these incredible animals. Aquatic Life Institute is thrilled to announce the launch of the 3rd Aquaculture Certification Schemes Benchmark.📊 This annual report evaluates the welfare standards of 8 global seafood certifiers and, for the first time, an international ratings agency—Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program. We've also expanded this year's assessment to include the Soil Association Organic Standards for Great Britain Aquaculture. Key findings: 🦐 6 out of 9 prohibit eyestalk ablation in shrimp farming 🐟 5 out of 9 perform well in stocking density and space requirements 🐙 On this World Octopus Day, we're thrilled to recognize 2 additional certifiers taking a stance against octopus farming. We now have commitments from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Soil Association, Friend of the Sea, and RSPCA Assured. The eight global seafood certification schemes and one international ratings agency evaluated in this report collectively oversee the welfare of billions of aquatic animals each year. This underscores the significant impact that these bodies have, and highlights the importance of benchmark evaluations like this one in driving improved welfare standards and fostering a more compassionate and sustainable future.
