About us

The black community is disproportionately affected by mental health and substance abuse problems in many respects. We are less likely to get help for such problems, and when we do get help, we are less likely to get the kind of treatments that are known to be effective. Lack of accurate information about mental illnesses and treatments for them, reluctance to acknowledge problems and seek help due to stigma and other concerns, and lack of knowledge about where and how to get the right kind of help are all significant barriers to getting effective treatment. A primary aim of our organization is to develop partnerships with other community-based organizations, institutions, programs, and individuals to bring attention to mental health-related issues in the black community. The goal is to foster open and ongoing discussion of these issues, with the hope of ultimately reducing their impact on our community.
