34% of former NFL players believe they have CTE, and of those, 25% reported suicidality, according to a new study from The Football Players Health Study at Harvard University. The former players who believed they have CTE reported significantly more cognitive problems and a higher proportion of low testosterone, depression, and chronic pain, compared with those who did not have concerns about CTE. The researchers recommended identifying conditions that are treatable, as CTE is only diagnosable through a postmortem exam.

In recognition of World Brain Day, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)’s Dr. Robert Innis describes his work in neuropsychiatry and evaluating how different methods of imaging neuroinflammation in the brain can play a role in understanding psychiatric disorders. Dr. Innis and his colleagues are investigating how new radioligands can help detect neuroinflammation in many disorders, including alcohol use disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, Long-COVID, and depression. By investing in these key brain imaging tools, Dr. Innis hopes to more accurately evaluate how well new treatments work and contribute to advancing knowledge about psychiatric disorders. 🔬 Revolutionizing Healthcare with Nuclear Medicine! 🔬 📢 Alejandro Arbona-Lampaya explains how nuclear medicine plays a crucial role in healthcare. Using radioactive tracers, this field provides detailed diagnostic imaging to diagnose and treat heart disease, cancer, and brain disorders. 📸 SPECT vs. PET Scans: - SPECT: Provides 3-D images to detect issues like blocked coronary arteries. - PET: Shows metabolic activity, essential for cancer detection and monitoring brain disorders. 💡 Why Nuclear Medicine? It’s safe and precise, with radiation doses comparable to routine X-rays. The benefits of early detection and accurate diagnosis far outweigh the minimal risks. 🔗 Learn more from Alejandro Arbona-Lampaya about how nuclear medicine is revolutionizing healthcare.
