Today we are honored to share the story of Todd Crush, a man who’s experienced one of the most harrowing journeys anyone could face – from abandonment at the onset of his life, to childhood abuse, attempted suicide, schizophrenia, PTSD, and more. Running has become a key means by which he carves a path forward. You can also follow him on Instagram @toddarkynscrush HOW DID YOU GET INTO RUNNING? I was about 21 years old and sitting in the dentist’s office. I picked up a copy of Runners World, and headed out that afternoon, swollen jaw and all. I was hooked from the first stride. Everything about it seemed very natural to me, especially the mental aspect. Within a year I was up to 100-mile weeks. This went on for about four years, until the onset of my schizophrenia. For decades after, I was too anxious and paranoid to run. Last year, I started fighting back. I’m out there every day and have three ultras scheduled between September 24 and May 25. When my mileage went over 65 miles a week, the symptoms of my schizophrenia went away. I have no anxiety or paranoia either. As of this writing, I have 100 days completely free of symptoms. Today, we’re thrilled to spotlight one of our clients, Tori Puglia, who not only balances training for the Chicago Marathon with teaching middle school students, but personifies determination, discipline, and a learning spirit. I started running in college for the most noble of reasons: to get over a break-up. It largely worked and was very therapeutic for me. When I signed up for my first half marathon, I could barely get up a flight of stairs without running out of breath. Completing 13.1 miles seemed like a near impossible task, but I enjoyed the idea of challenging myself and relying only on myself to get there; and for a large part, that's still why I love running today. I've always been someone who chooses a challenge whether it's going for a PhD or a marathon - or both! If someone tells me it's going to be difficult, that's really when I put myself into high gear and go after it. Since starting my running journey, I've tackled several half marathons, triathlons, shorter distances, and hopefully this fall, the Chicago Marathon.
