Happy 1st Anniversary ARC – We’re Ready to Serve! by Dr. Stephen Fitch (ARC Co-founder and CEO) We’re thrilled to announce that Accelerated Restoration Collaborative (ARC) is celebrating our first year of operations as we resume work at 30+ scalable reforestation and restoration sites located in Madagascar, Brazil and Nepal. Our journey over the course of the past twelve months have been eventful to say the least. The flow of photos from our site at Aranta-Sotema, Madagascar wonderfully illustrates what it takes to build a “People First - Forest Restoration” organization. Pic 1) Heavy Lifting There’s always a ton of heavy lifting when it comes time to launch and build an international forest restoration organization. The short list of (boring) but essential activities include becoming a legal non-profit organization in the USA along with securing each project nation partner’s legal NGO registration. All of these heavy lifting activities and more have been completed. ARC and our partner nations are moving forward! Pic 2) Stuck in the Mud Anyone who’s ever worked in developing world nations knows about getting stuck in the mud physically and logistically. Thankfully, the ARC team is made up of leaders who have over 60 years of collective field experience. We know how to move ahead, get stuck and then get unstuck! Pic 3) Cementing the Post There are a lot of essential tasks and systems that require fixing in place. ARC’s dedicated leadership team has solidified our Board of Directors along with our key US staff members. We have also recruited and trained our field teams, and nailed down our Monitoring and Marketing systems. Further, we have signed MOUs with 8 Corporate partners, 1 foundation and two non-profit donor groups. And, we have a rapidly growing list of future partners lining up to join in caring for people and planet. Pic 4) Ready to Go There’s nothing more rewarding than a job well done. All the signs point to a preferred future where thousands of local community members will be provided with employment as agents of forest restoration. Pic 5) Aranta-Sotema Sign with thousands of seedlings growing in the background With restoration sites already actively planting, our international planting partners have managed to begin the restoration process through the planting of hundreds of thousands of seedlings and saplings. With your help, we will surely see the number of sites, employees and emerging forest flourish in the years to come. Happy World Mangrove Day!🌱 Did you know that mangroves are vital ecosystems both above and below the water? Above water, they protect coastlines from erosion, reduce storm damage, and provide habitats for diverse wildlife. Below water, their roots stabilize sediments, improve water quality by filtering pollutants, and serve as nurseries for many marine species. Protecting and restoring mangroves is essential for maintaining healthy coastal environments and supporting biodiversity. At ARC, we are committed to restoring these critical ecosystems. Together with our planting collaborators, SamaÚma Projetos Socioambientais in Brazil, Red Island Restoration in Madagascar, and all our brilliant sponsors, we are actively working to rejuvenate mangrove estuaries. Our efforts not only enhance biodiversity but also provide economic opportunities for local communities as stewards of these vital landscapes. Join us in celebrating and supporting the essential work of mangrove restoration! #MangroveRestoration #ARC #SamaUma #RedIslandRestoration #CoastalProtection #Brazil #madagascar #ARCEmploytoRestore Learn how to collaborate with ARC by visiting our website www.arcrestoration.org Connect with us on our social media platforms: Instagram: https://lnkd.in/ggMKGgmE Facebook: Accelerated Restoration Collaborative LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/gJ-jvnYQ Twitter/X: twitter.com/empowerwithARC

On this Biodiversity Day, May 22, 2024, ARC would like to highlight the work of our collaborator, SamaÚma Projetos Socioambientais, in restoring the mangrove forests within the estuaries of Alcantara, Brazil. As we restore the forests with native species including Black Mangroves (𝘈𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘴), Red Mangroves (𝘙𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦), and White Mangroves (𝘈𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢) we are directly expanding forest area and contributing to the local ecological systems essential to the proliferation of local biodiversity. This provides habitat for local fiddler crabs and Swamp ghost crab (𝘜𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴) which in turn provide a food source for the Scarlet ibis (𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳) and local fishermen who rely on catches for their sustained incomes. By taking part in this project, you'll become an essential part of the ecosystem, supporting ARC and SamaÚma in our mission to expand mangrove forests and protect the unique biodiversity of this landscape. Welcome to our nursery at Kamaldhaap, Jhapa, Nepal. It is managed by Mana Kumari Rai, recognized as the lady in blue in the photos. In collaboration with our planting partners, Prosperity Community and Village Hope - Nepal, this project supports the community by providing job opportunities. Additionally, it contributes to the conservation of the existing forest, which holds significant biodiversity value, through the planting of produced seedlings. 1) As a key member of the Community Forest User Committee, Mana Kumari Rai leads various activities within the community. She is enthusiastic about participating in this natural restoration project and possesses a strong passion for environmental work. 2) Mana Kumari Rai is seen meticulously organizing the polypots in the polypot bed. 3) She is shown sowing seeds of the Ficus Roxburgh species in the nursery seed bed, with the green bucket containing the Ficus Roxburgh seeds. 4) Healthy and thriving! ARC's Co-founder, Dr. Stephen Fitch, reflects on his return to the very first project site that ignited his environmental mission. Read on for his personal account. "Revisiting the Udo Escarpment during my April 2024 trip to Ethiopia was an absolute thrill as the Udo site is where my involvement in forest restoration all began. Keep in mind, the request from President Hailemariam to take over the work came as a complete surprise. The opportunity was filled with challenges and seeming absurdities. First, I knew nothing about forest restoration at the time and perhaps most significantly, the project had been abandoned as a failure by a well funded group of experts from the European Union. Their reason for the EU groups choice to walk away was clear and profound; After spending 300,000 Euros there were no surviving trees. Who was I, with no money and no formal training to take on the challenge? Nevertheless, the need and urgency of the challenge required a good faith effort. In short order, a qualified leader was recruited and I was able to raise sufficient funds to re-launch seedling production at the nursery and funding for all of the local community employees. The humble start at Udo was 19 years ago. Since then, well over 100 million dollars has been raised for the planting of over 1 billion trees. The “Employ to Restore” Commitment that was pioneered at the Udo Ethiopia is still in practice today through Accelerated Restoration Collaborative."
