About us

Many people are afraid of losing their independence as they age. At Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM), we believe that every senior should be able to remain happy, healthy, and at home. Our comprehensive services aim to provide older persons and persons with disabilities the independence and dignity they strive for while residing in an environment that is comfortable to them. Who We Are and What We Do Established in April of 1974, the AAAWM has helped countless adults live more productive lives by providing the tools and services needed to maintain independence. We are a non-profit organization that provides aging services, as well as information and assistance. We plan, develop, oversee, and advocate for in-home senior care services to older adults, especially those with social and economic needs. Collaboration between nurses and social workers results in valuable in-home care plans that aim to keep seniors in their homes as they age. All services are provided with funding from local, state, and federal sources.

  • We celebrate an advocacy win as we get close to starting another state fiscal year on October 1! For FY2025, a $3 million expansion of Michigan's Long Term Care Ombudsman program was granted to increase staff-to-bed ratios. This was an issue championed by the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan's advocacy arms with meetings, education, and letters to legislators as the ratio beforehand was significantly lacking, ranking Michigan 50th out of the 53 programs in the nation. Long Term Care Ombudsman work to resolve problems related to the health, safety, welfare, and rights of individuals who live in long-term care facilities. With this increase, Michigan's ombudsman can increase facility visits, support the recruitment of volunteers, and be proactive in addressing resident concerns. • This week, September 22 – 28, is National Employ Older Workers Week (NEOWW)! The theme of this year, "Embracing Experience and Empowering Futures", aims to explore diverse aging experiences and discuss how older workers and employers can combat common stereotypes.
