Today is National Coming Out Day! In honor of today, our out and proud Executive Director with Avamere at Sandy, Maddie Almodovar, shares her experience. "Happy National Coming Out Day! This is a day that holds such a special place in my heart. It is a time to reflect on the journey that brought me to where I am today and how far I have come in my acceptance and celebration of self. From a young age, I always knew that something about me was different. I was more interested in being a knight so that I could win the heart of a princess than in being a princess myself. These weren't feelings I would fully embrace until my early twenties. Now happily married to my beautiful wife, I am so proud of how much I have grown. I can't stress enough how accepting my family is and has always been. My mother is a tireless and relentless advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, and both of my parents excitedly attend Pride events with my wife and I yearly. Growing up, the message I received from my family was one of acceptance and love, however, I realize not every family is as fortunate as mine. One of the most beautiful things about the LGBTQIA+ community is our concept of chosen family. Working in senior living, chosen family is a feeling and community I know well. My residents and staff have and always will be an extension of my family. This National Coming Out Day it is my seniors that I think of. The queer leaders before me, both big and small, who through their advocacy and representation, have paved the way for the next generation. While the coming out journey can be lonely, and no two stories are ever the same, how lovely is it that there's such a wonderful and vibrant community waiting to embrace you? From old to young we are all one. Welcome to the family, everyone!" #ComingOutDay #Pride #LGBTQIA
