We are responsible for both design and the entire production chain of the Ariane 5 and Ariane 6 rockets, including launch services by our Arianespace subsidiary. On Wednesday 2 October, #ArianeGroup had the honour of hosting a distinguished group of French and German public officials and academics from prominent thinktanks FRS | Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung for an afternoon of fruitful discussions and demonstrations at our Les Mureaux site in France. Exchanges focused on ballistic missile defence, hypersonic glide vehicle technology and space domain awareness, all space-related issues of crucial strategic importance for #Europe and all at the heart of ArianeGroup’s technological portfolio. This visit highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue between #France and #Germany in order to not only foster a common understanding of geostrategic challenges, but also develop effective joint solutions drawing on the potent legacy of industrial cooperation between the two countries that ArianeGroup fully embodies today. The day ended with a tour of the #Ariane6 rocket main stage assembly hall, giving our guests an up-close direct look at the industrial reality behind the objective of guaranteeing European autonomous access to space. A big thank-you to all participants for making the day so interesting and successful. After around three and a half years, we are saying goodbye to the Hot Firing Module (HFM) test upper stage of the #Ariane6. Since this upper stage was installed at the #ESA P5.2 test stand, the #DLR and ArianeGroup teams have carried out numerous important tests. This purpose-built test stand has also done an outstanding job. The successful campaign was a unique highlight in the history of DLR #Lampoldshausen and an important milestone on the way to the inaugural flight of #Ariane6 on 9 July 2024. Special thanks go to all the DLR teams involved in Lampoldshausen and ArianeGroup for their excellent and trusting #cooperation. The upper stage is now on its way to ESTEC for another test program. We are now preparing the P5.2 for its new task in the frame of the #test campaign of the #PHOEBUS demonstrator for a future Ariane 6 carbon upper stage. The aim of the program is to demonstrate that carbon fibre composite material can be used instead of metal for the #cryogenic tanks, thereby saving weight and increasing the payload capacity of the #launcher.

With its engine nozzle glowing red, the #Ariane6 upper stage soared through the extreme cold of space to complete its mission. 🔥 The Vinci® engine represents the latest generation of cryogenic upper stage engine technology, designed for simplicity in both construction and operation. Its standout feature is multi-ignition capability, allowing up to four restarts to place multiple payloads in different orbits as required by the mission. With an operating time of up to 15 minutes, Vinci® has the longest run time of the Ariane 6’s engines, facing extreme thermal cycling between cryogenic and combustion temperatures. The nozzle is developed and produced at ArianeGroup’s site in Le Haillan, France. Using #AdditiveManufacturing and powder metallurgy, the components are primarily made from high-temperature composites such as carbon-carbon and silicon carbide. These methods allow our #RocketMakers to produce complex structures in large quantities without mechanical rework, improving cost and time efficiencies over traditional methods.
