Last week, the Biden administration released a list of the first 10 medications that will be subject to price caps as part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The administration is selling its proposal as a way to save seniors money on prescriptions, but history tells us that price-fixing policies do just the opposite – harming the very people their proponents purport to want to help. “Patients need to understand that when the government demands downward pressure on some drugs, pharmaceutical manufacturers will be forced to make up their loss by raising prices on other drugs or by downshifting their research and development of other therapies," said Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry President and CEO Daniel Seiden. "For the White House to cast its plan as one with only winners ignores that many patients will find themselves on the losing end.” Price control policies do not work in a free market. A government takeover of drug pricing will crush innovation and discourage manufacturers from investing in and developing new products that could change or even save lives. Every legislative session brings its share of bad ideas. Tax increases. New costs and needless mandates on business. Attempts to repeal Arizona's longstanding status as a right-to-work state. The Chamber has identified these types of bad-for-business policies as "job killers" for the impact they would have on our business climate and economy. During the 2024 legislative session, 72 "job killers" were introduced. Today, the Arizona Chamber Foundation and Common Sense Institute Arizona released a report detailing the massive hit Arizona's economy would have taken if even a fraction of those bills were enacted. Key Findings: ▶ $37.2 BILLION+: The economic impact to Arizona if even just 20 of the 72 "job killers" were enacted ▶ 540,000: The estimated number of jobs that would be lost due to new costs and burdens on business ▶ $9.5 million: The economic growth Arizona would have foregone over the last five years had we followed Colorado's heavy-handed regulatory approach This is what we mean when we say that policy matters. "Arizona's future depends on our ability to resist harmful regulations and continue fostering a business-friendly environment that encourages innovation, investment, and job creation. Yesterday, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry had the opportunity to join the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and GMI - Global Market Innovators for an outstanding summit focused on the critical importance of cybersecurity. At the Chamber, we're constantly checking in with our members to find out what issues are keeping employers up at night. Across the board, the threat of a cyber attack now ranks as a top concern among Arizona's business community. Fortunately, Arizona is home to innovative companies and talented professionals who are setting the standard for cybersecurity practices. The fact that CISA chose to host this meeting in Arizona is a huge testament to our state's reputation as a leader in cybersecurity and resiliency. The summit provided a unique and worthwhile platform for leaders in government, law enforcement, educational institutions, and businesses spanning nearly every industry to exchange knowledge and explore best practices for addressing cybersecurity and safeguarding our digital future. A big thanks to CISA for convening this meeting, and especially to Director Jen Easterly for taking the time to share your expertise and insight with Arizona's business community.
