  • Our Team is currently fabricating the large bore mechanical room piping for one of our West Lafayette, IN customers. The steel pipe is cut with our HGG 6 axis pipe profiler, labeled, and then welded to optimize the waste and minimize the onsite material handling. We have fabricated the assemblies from our in-house Union Virtual Design & Construction department. This project is unique because we digitally draw and spool this piping to send the cut pieces to our 6 axis pipe profiler, assemble, and weld each custom piece. This process eliminates having to cut and build each assembly onsite in an uncontrolled environment. This piping is large compared to the typical heating/cooling project. The sizes range from 30”, 20”, 18” 16”, 14” and 12” down to 2”. We are fabricating here in our fabrication shop eliminating labor in the field and in a safer environment with an overhead crane to assist in material handling. Personnel: Jim Spencer, Max Donner, Rob Summers, Garret Jones, and Colton Cronkite VDC Piping Designer: Matt Anzilotti HGG Profiling Specialists

  • Our Project Highlight for October is Burnham 310. The Special Projects Team is doing an upgrade on the domestic water system. Plumbers are installing a new 8" filter system on the domestic water supply to the building. They also removed the old domestic water boilers and domestic water booster pump expansion tanks from the mechanical room on the 18th floor. This project is a multi-stage project to prep for new equipment. The project is being run by Richard Flanagan, with the assistance of Dale Sleigh, Conley Dee, Jake Cook, Levi Jury, Tyler Milles, Ron Shult, and Ryan Ohl. Richard is doing a great job training the apprentices and has the patience in teaching them.

  • Our team has been working diligently at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Wymer Hall. Weather has played a huge role in this project from the beginning. Even after the building was erected, there were still many weather-related challenges. From snow and ice days, mud in the trenches during underground work, to icy floors on all levels. Our field management teams have been able to overcome all obstacles. The hydronic side of this project has many unique features. From the geothermal loop to the heat recovery chiller, many energy saving components such as chilled beams are being utilized to maintain conditioned space. With roughly 27-miles of copper being installed in a relatively small building footprint, it was imperative that our in-house VDC department work closely with the design team to coordinate the installation so our fabrication shops could be utilized for pre-fabrication of all piping and ductwork in order to meet the construction schedule. Onsite personnel have included Taylor Sickles, Kyle Brown, Levi Lang, Jack Kelly, Damian Light, Ed Schmidt, Pete Fortney, Adam Hatfield, and Calvin Grace.

  • The Service Department completed an emergency crane pick at 310 Burnham the weekend of August, 2nd. They were alerted to the issue of no hot water in the entire building. Given the previous issues with the boilers, the Service Dept was given the green light to devise a solution and design a system that would act as a temporary solution until the new boiler system could be engineered. Due to the penthouse being on the roof, and the domestic water booster pumps creating a top-fed-down system, there was no way to set the boiler on the ground. The only option was to get it to the roof, roughly 20 stories up on a narrow building. By Monday morning a temporary boiler was on site, and materials were gathered to make the connections necessary into the domestic hot water system. Custom Service Crane, Inc. set up the 360T crane to get the boiler to the roof. By Tuesday morning the building was supplied with hot water. Field personnel included Seth Chitwood, Conley Dee, Harlan Gilmore, Richard Flanagan, and Austin Cooley.
