Riparian buffers are vegetated areas along streams and rivers that play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. These buffers, typically planted with native trees and shrubs, filter out nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, stabilize stream banks and reduce erosion. They help mitigate flooding by slowing runoff and absorbing water into the soil. Additionally, riparian buffers provide habitats for birds, mammals, insects and amphibians, while also shading streams to cool water temperatures, increase oxygen levels and support aquatic biodiversity. These natural zones are vital for protecting both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Want to learn more about our native nursery? Visit our website at https://lnkd.in/em9wh4F7 today!

Working with the Baltimore County Department of Public Works & Transportation and RK&K, we successfully restored 3,887 linear feet of stream along the Upper Scotts Level Branch. Completed in February, with planting finished in May, the project replaced an outdated concrete channel with a natural stream channel, incorporating a series of riffles and pools to enhance hydrologic stability. Buried rock protection and buried log sills were also implemented to mitigate high shear stress areas. Trees removed during construction were repurposed as root wads to support grade control and wetland functions, while native species like sycamores, dogwoods and willows were planted to enhance the areas aesthetic appeal. With the Upper Scotts project complete, we’re excited to announce that work on Lower Scotts will begin later this fall!

From mid-April through September, ARRC partnered with C.S. Davidson, Inc., LandStudies, Inc. & the Rail Trail Authority to remove legacy sediment from Oil Creek in Heidelberg Township. The goal was to restore the floodplain to its natural state, as it existed 100-200 years ago. Watch the video and click the link to read our latest blog for more details on how we helped preserve and protect this vital ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/e3exuNqD

Over the weekend, we participated in the Community Planting Day at Loyd H. Roland Memorial Park in Akron, PA. It was a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the environment by planting native trees and shrubs to enhance local ecosystems. Through our efforts, we helped reduce sediment runoff, improve nutrient processing and stabilize stream banks. Among the species we planted were sycamore, red maple, swamp white oak and black gum, along with native shrubs like red osier dogwood, winterberry and arrowwood viburnum. It was a rewarding experience contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future for the community!

In collaboration with C.S. Davidson, Inc. and LandStudies, Inc., we're beginning work at Loyd H. Roland Memorial Park in Akron, PA. This project focuses on removing legacy sediment from three unnamed tributaries of Cocalico Creek, a connected wetland and nearby floodplains. The legacy sediment we clear from 2,000 linear feet of tributaries will enhance stability, improve habitats and prevent erosion on nearby hillslopes. Through floodplain restoration, we aim to minimize shear stress, erosion and the flow of sediment and nutrients into the Cocalico Watershed, resulting in improved stream and floodplain hydrology. The new floodplain will filter nutrients upstream, providing many ecological benefits. Additionally, we'll plant a variety of native species to further support and strengthen the ecosystem.

We’re revisiting Peters Creek, one of our standout projects from last year. This design-build collaboration with the Donegal Trout Unlimited Chapter focused on restoring and enhancing habitats for both wild trout and the threatened Chesapeake Log Perch. Our efforts included constructing cross rock vanes and modified mud sills to maintain grade control, stabilizing stream banks and creating fish passages and habitats.
