As we settle into Fall, and reflect on the Summer that was, Mark Lanier’s “Academy 8.0” conference in Houston stands out. Thanks Mark, for featuring Artery Studios’ medical animation (see image portraying a traumatic hyperextension knee injury), and for your kind words describing it as “stellar work”. Thanks for the “stellar event”!

SEPTEMBER IS WORLD ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS MONTH   The most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder in which abnormal changes in the brain set in motion an unusual buildup of proteins. Forming what are known as amyloid plaques and tau tangles, these proteins cause neurons (brain cells) to cease functioning. Increasing areas of the brain are affected as neurons continue to lose connection and die, and the brain tissue atrophies (shrinks) accordingly.   Although these changes can start long before symptoms appear, in time they are reflected in a decline in the person’s normal function, such as compromised memory and social skills.

A DARK HISTORY OF WWII ANATOMY TEXTS The recent Association of Medical Illustrators’ (AMI) conference featured a moving talk by Dr. Claudia Krebs from UBC. Her research sheds light on a gruesome atrocity from WWII – the use of bodies of concentration camp victims for Nazi-aligned anatomists to create their work. As highlighted by Dr. Krebs, the texts by Eduard Pernkopf are particularly appalling. This Viennese anatomist was a proud member of the Nazi party, wearing a swastika on his sleeve in his role as Dean of the Vienna Medical School and was associated with “cleansing” Jews from the school. Pernkopf created dissections and oversaw 11 medical illustrators to paint them - men and women who were themselves active Nazi party members. In his Atlas of Topographical and Applied Human Anatomy, the artists incorporated their ideology into their signatures, including Lepier (forming a swastika on his “r” – see figure below), Endtresser (“s” letters shown as the lightning bolt insignia of the SS), and Batke (the fours in 1944 also shown like the SS), etc. Dr. Krebs has personalized this gruesome historical practice by linking the information on the original physical paintings – dates and places that were documented by the artist – with archival ledgers associated with the anatomy lab. This painstaking work allows us to understand that the painted dissections were each a real person – including their name and age – shedding an entirely new light on this dark horror. Thank you, Dr. Krebs, for your important work and for your recent talk.

DRY EYE SYNDROME* Itchy eyes? It might not be just summer allergies. Dry Eye Syndrome results from a problem with lubrication of the eyeball. When you blink, a thin film of tears is spread over the eyeball. Tears are made up of three layers: an oily layer (an outer layer that keeps watery tears from evaporating too quickly); a watery layer (this middle layer washes the eye, removing dust and debris); and a mucus layer (the inner layer allows watery tears to adhere to the eyeball). Together, these three layers keep our eyes moist. If there’s a problem with tear production, Dry Eye may result – with symptoms like scratchiness or blurred vision. Or if there’s a problem with the oily layer, your eyes may create more tears to compensate for the watery film evaporating too quickly – but it’s still called Dry Eye – even if you’re crying. *July is Dry Eyes Awareness month – apropos during allergy season!

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer occurs in the large bowel, otherwise known as the colon (‘colo-’), or in the rectum (‘-rectal’). People over 50 are at increased risk of colorectal cancer. Other risk factors include long-term alcohol consumption, smoking cigarettes, eating red meat and obesity. The most popular screening test is the fecal immunochemical test (FIT). This entails using a kit to collect a sample of your stool and dropping it at a lab or into the mail. Colonoscopy can also be used to assess for colorectal cancer. Catching it earlier provides a much better chance of survival. There’s no shame in talking about colorectal cancer or asking your physician about screening for it #colorectal #cancer

Having trouble catching your breath? It might not just be love –   Hemothorax occurs when blood collects in the pleural cavity – the potential space between the lining of the lungs and rib cage. Blunt trauma injuries can cause a hemothorax, including rib fractures, lung damage, or rupture of small blood vessels. A large collection of blood can cause ventilation issues or infections – and needs to be drained via tube thoracostomy, pictured here.
