Not every budding producer has the fortune of interning for Rick Rubin. 🕶 But then again, not just anyone will cold email people listed in the credits of their favorite albums asking to connect.
Clearly, the effort paid off for Rob Bisel, proving that hard work, authenticity, and providing value to others pay off.
Recently recognized by Music Business Worldwide (MBW) as one of the World’s Greatest Producers, Bisel has been nominated for multiple Grammy awards and worked with SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, and countless others.
Here are 6 lessons anyone in the music industry — not just producers — can take from his recent MBW interview:
1️⃣ Be yourself, no matter who is in the room. Don’t feel like you have to try and impress people. Early on, he saw how Rick Rubin just being himself had a disarming effect in the studio, setting the tone for artists to be themselves with him and to feel comfortable trying new things.
2️⃣ Work hard, but be patient. While Rob says he doesn’t see many successful producers who don’t have an “insane work ethic,” you also have to be ok with the fact that not every session is going to be super productive or yield something great.
3️⃣ Enjoy the ride. It’s easy to feel like you need to keep moving from one accomplishment to the next, but taking the time to appreciate the experience and what goes into it will make it much more enjoyable.
4️⃣ If someone has an idea, try it. Often that “super dumb” idea turns out to be the stroke of brilliance that makes the song, but you won’t know unless you give it a chance. Shooting down ideas out of hand just tends to make everyone second guess themselves, and that's never conducive to creativity.
5️⃣ Seek new sources of inspiration. Sometimes great ideas just come to you, but often you have to go looking. Constantly challenge yourself to find new directions, ideas, and sounds — to look for inspiration in other music but also non-musical mediums (like interviews with founders).
6️⃣ Find ways to be of value. Whether you’re just starting out or deep into your career, having a good attitude and working hard to be of value and service to others in whatever way you can will pay off.
Rob's story is a reminder that in the music industry, as in life, the most profound successes come from a blend of passion, perseverance, and openness.
