New Blog Post! A Creative Haven: ARTogether’s Summer Camp for Immigrant and Refugee Kids Imagine arriving in a new country, where the sounds, sights, and language are all unfamiliar. For refugee and immigrant children, this experience can be overwhelming. The challenges of adapting to a new culture, making friends, and finding a sense of belonging can feel insurmountable. This understanding is what inspired us to create our Summer Art Camp program. We saw the need for a safe, welcoming space where these children could feel understood and free to express themselves. Last week we completed a mural celebrating the community restoration of the Clinton Park community center. Led by our public arts manager Sabina Kariat along with youth volunteers from the neighborhood and our Shadow Movements program, they completed the mural in just under 6 days. We are excited to be a part of this green space restoration in these underserved areas along with other Oakland based organizations like Oakland Trybe. The neighborhood came together for an evening of festivities and celebration of these safe spaces that are being revitalized in the area.

PLACES closing event symposium had an incredible panel discussion, led by the visionary Christine Wong Yap, the group delved into the heart of what it means to build cross-cultural bridges through art and activism. The amazing panelists—Brett Cook, Beatrice Glow, and ARTogether's Michelle Lin—shared their powerful projects and personal experiences, revealing how they've transcended borders and practiced true allyship. From immersive experiences to designing sustainable, human-centered approaches, their insights on collaboration, accountability, and solidarity were nothing short of enlightening. Let's keep the conversation going and continue to explore ways we can foster belonging and resist the forces of commodification and dehumanization. @montalvoarts @icasanjose @christinewongyap @beatriceglow, @brettcookstudio, @firstborncryptid

We’re honored to award Vairea Tupana Samn (@tanerai_i_nia) with a Mini-Grant in support of her Tahitian dance group. As the group rehearses and prepares to compete in the 2025 Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete dance competition, Vairea will be using the Mini-Grant to purchase materials from Tahiti to hand-sew 20 costumes. Born & raised in Tahiti (French Polynesia), Vairea is indigenous Ma’ohi craftswoman who specializes in traditional weaving & Tahitian dance costume designs. She began dancing at age 4 & continued to learn & perform with her family’s church, Tiroama. In 2009, Vairea did her first Heiva i Tahiti with the legendary troupe Kei Tawhiti. After, she went on to dance with Nohoarii, Ahutoru Nui, Tamariki Oparo, Pupu Tuha’a Pae, Tefana i Ahura’i, Heikura Nui & Tere’ori. Vairea has also worked as part of the costume teams for big groups such as Hei Tahiti, Nuna’a E Hau & Toahiva. In 2017, she moved to California & opened the USA’s 1st Tahitian Cultural Center (Tanera’i i Ni’a) which focuses on helping groups with their costumes, presentation themes, language translation and cultural education. As of July 2024, she is leading a group of 18 performers & 12 musicians to prepare to enter the Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete Dance Competition in March 2025. Her dream is continue sharing the indigenous values of her Ma’ohi ancestors through dance, language and music.
