ARTS ARE ESSENTIAL, LEARNING IS CRITICAL, AND ART IN LEARNING IS TRANSFORMATIVE. 📢 Louder for those in the back! The benefits of the arts in education have been proven in more ways than one. Not only are they effective academically but also socially. The arts provide a completely holistic learning experience. Participation in the arts yields remarkable outcomes for students: 🔬 They are four times more likely to participate in a science fair.  🏫 They are three times more likely to win an award for school attendance.  🥇They are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. Research has also found that low-income students participating in after-school arts programs are likelier to experience increased self-esteem and improved social skills. Luckily, we provide both in-school and after-school programs to help achieve these goals! As we continue our celebration of National Arts in Education Week, let’s take a little stroll down memory lane and revisit how AECSD got our start as a non-profit dedicated to providing a meaningful arts education to the students of San Diego 🤓 Since 1963, Arts Education Connection San Diego has delivered various arts education programs to San Diego students and communities through performances, workshops, residencies, and professional learning opportunities, connecting young people to their cultural roots and creative wings. 1963 - San Diego Symphony musician Gary White begins coordinating small ensembles of musicians to perform for students in local schools. 1967 - We incorporated as a California non-profit organization and became a Young Audiences affiliate. 1992 - We change our name to Young Audiences of San Diego (YASD). 1998 - YASD shifts our primary focus from providing performing arts assemblies to building longer-term partnerships with school districts. 2005 - YASD merges with City Moves!, a dance education organization, expanding our board of directors, staff, and artists. 2016 - Young Audiences National changes its name to Young Audiences Arts for Learning to highlight the shift in programming. 2021 - A4LSD leaves the national Young Audiences network and changes its name to Arts Education Connection San Diego. You may have known us by a different name before, but we continue to hold the same mission and vision: We transform learning by bringing the joy and richness of the arts into schools and communities. National Arts in Education Week is a national celebration highlighting the significant impact of the arts in education. Established by Congress in 2010 through House Resolution 275, this celebration aims to draw widespread attention to this critical cause among elected officials and educational decision-makers nationwide, advocating for equal access to the arts for all students. Although we celebrate arts education throughout the year, having a specific reason to commemorate and bring attention to this vital work is always enjoyable! If you are wondering how to expand arts education in your community or want to learn more about being an advocate, please reach out. Our partnership with Girl Scouts San Diego is genuinely so special to us 💚 This summer, we teamed up to provide workshops covering the visual and performance arts and working together to “Find Your Magic” ✨ Throughout the week, these scouts learned techniques in Creative Contemporary Movement, Foil Art, Creating and Designing Superheroes, and connecting to nature by creating a new bird. Great news! We got the grant! Arts Education Connection San Diego has been granted funding from the City of San Diego's Organizational Support Program. This generous support will enable us to continue our mission of transforming learning by bringing the joy and richness of the arts into schools and communities. We are grateful to Jonathon Glus, his team, and the commissioners for their efforts in maintaining a vibrant and creative environment in San Diego. It's an honor to receive funding from the FY25 OSP Grant. We are proud to join the ranks of some of the best arts nonprofits in San Diego and are looking forward to sharing the significant impact we will all achieve together.
