A hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases such as #ParkinsonsDisease is the progressive loss of proteostasis, leading to conversion of proteins from productive folding pathways to populate aggregation-prone misfolded (non-native or intermediate) states 🔬 To combat this toxicity, cells have evolved degradation pathways (ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy) that detect and degrade misfolded proteins. In their recent publication, Team Calakos introduces a new open-source tool for counting synapses called SynBot 🔬 SynBot allows researchers to quickly and easily measure changes in synapses using regular fluorescence microscope images. SynBot does this through automated image analysis techniques, including machine learning tools to tell the difference between real synapses and noise.
