The ASCE Lehigh Valley Section was officially founded at the Bethlehem Club on June 5, 1922.

About us

The first meeting of ASCE members interested in forming a local section was held on February 20, 1922 in Bethlehem, PA. Two additional meetings held in February and March of that year resulted in the drafting of a constitution and bylaws. In April 1922, ASCE approved the formation of the Section with twenty-two founding members. Officers were elected in June and the first regular meeting of the Section was held in October 1922. Four meetings were held per year until 1935 when it was expanded to six meetings. The number of meetings has continued to expand, and today the Lehigh Valley Section of ASCE hosts meetings, continuing education programs, and social events throughout the year. All members of the local engineering community are welcome to attend ASCE events. We hope to see you at our next meeting.

  • June brought us an in-person construction site tour of the I-80 Exit 308 interchange realignment in Stroudsburg, which is a near $100 million construction project reconstructing the interchange with two bridge replacements, two new roundabouts, new ramps and road reconstruction, and plenty of retaining walls, new signs, curbs/sidewalk, and drainage/utility work. A great turnout of ASCE Lehigh Valley Members made the trip to brave the 90+ degree weather for a project tour, and then afterwards, head to Stroudsmoor Country Inn to enjoy dinner and a presentation on the project by lead designer Tyler Kerstetter, PE of CDM Smith. Special thanks to Tyler for participating and presenting, as well as Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and J.D. Eckman, Inc. for allowing the tour to take place, and Nicholas Giglio, PE of Urban Engineers for organizing the event! Joseph McFadden and Ian Carson, EIT of Michael Baker International were also of great assistance for planning and participating in the event!

LVASCE had their annual awards dinner last night at Lafayette College, where students and career professionals were honored for their engineering achievements. Students from each student chapter in our section were recognized as exceptional leaders. Congrats to Joseph Giannella and Jonathan Nowak from Kings College, Amanda Sprague from Lafayette College, and Kyra Boston from Lehigh University, for being recognized as winners of the 2024 ASCE Student Leadership award! Congratulations are also in order to Matt Evans, PE for being awarded as our 2023 Young Civil Engineer of the Year, and Keith Weitknecht for being awarded 2023 Civil Engineer of the Year! Another award that is given each year is for Project of the Year, and this years winner was the City of Allentown and Michael Baker International for their work on the Jordan Creek Greenway between Turner Street and MacArthur Road. Always nice to see a new project that benefits pedestrians and gives recreational opportunities! Special thanks to Sean Dooley for leading the awards committee, Kristen Sanford for leading the planning with Lafayette, and Lane Wilder, MEng, PE for overseeing the planning of this whole process! So much work is done behind the scenes to make this happen. Thank you to everyone that was able to attend, and thank you to everyone that volunteers their time to further contribute to the civil engineering profession!
