As the Ascend Analytics summit in Boulder, Colorado wraps up, I once again feel inspired by the passion and dedication everyone has for the renewable energy industry. I had the opportunity to talk with many brilliant minds and hardworking green energy advocates helping to make energy more sustainable, available, and affordable. Thank you to everyone for the great conversations whether it was during a panel breakout session, a quick hallway chat in-passing, over lunch, or on the group hike in the Boulder flatirons (photo below). It's always great to see industry friends and make new connections! From data centers to the hyper-localized power movement, here's yesterday's recap of insights shared during day 2 at the Ascend Summit 2024: Powering the Energy Transition. Lena Perkins, PhD, Emerging Technologies Manager at City of Palo Alto, "The market signal when we evaluate any project that is carbon free points toward locational marginal price accurately reflecting the locational marginal emissions." Mark Gabriel, President and CEO of United Power, Inc. on the hyper-localized power movement: "How many of you had something delivered from Amazon in the last month? They hyper-localized your purchasing, and I believe that's exactly what's going to happen with electricity in the next 10 years." Ted James, President, North America, at ACCURE Battery Intelligence, on bid optimization: "If you have predictive analytics capabilities, and you know where the battery is and where it's going, you can schedule agents around grid events. Having that visibility into the asset can allow you to better monetize it."

Over 350 professionals from all over the world have gathered to talk about energy transition opportunities during day 1 of the Ascend Summit 2024! 💡Monday highlights: Allison Clements, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Commissioner, on power market and regulatory reform in the energy transition: "We need a market design that works in this new world. We are operating a VHS grid for a Hulu society." Gary Dorris, Ph.D., Ascend's Founder and CEO, on load forecasting: "The system is not designed for a 5% shift in supply. This is where it gets interesting and why we're here. There is enormous opportunity." John DeAngelis, Storage Manager at Meta, on getting resources online faster: "We really need creative partners. What we are fundamentally trying to do hasn't been done in decades, and peers are hungry to partner in a different way."

What happened last week in CAISO after the increased volatility of early September? Ascend's SmartBidder team observed that despite mundane energy prices last week, there was still some value to be captured in RegDown, which is consistently the highest priced ancillary service in CAISO: - On Sept. 12th, RegDown prices hit $19 during HE17, one of the hours with the lowest energy prices of the day - A strategy that uses RegDown to charge in some midday hours would have led to stronger returns than a simple day-ahead energy arbitrage (or TB4) strategy Last week marked a return to much calmer conditions in CAISO, but the SmartBidder team is always prepared to help our customers address shifting market conditions in CAISO and ERCOT. Be sure to connect with Ascend today if you're interested in better understanding market opportunities at your project nodes! https://okt.to/56BONd
