Mary grew up in Jersey City. She had four siblings, her sisters Catherine and Rose and two brothers William and John.   When Mary was only 16 years old, she recalls Dec 7th, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. On that infamous day, the skies over New York and New Jersey were filled with military airplanes guarding US Airways. This was the day Mary knew her life and career goals had changed forever. Mary went to college at Seton Hall and received her nursing degree, becoming an RN in 1947. She then entered the US Air Force as a registered nurse, reaching Captain’s rank and while on active duty had the opportunity to travel to California and Europe. She also served during Korea and spent 20-plus years in the Reserves and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. Her sister Catherine served as an RN in England in WWII and then joined the Medical Mission Sisters and became a Catholic sister taking on the religious name Sister Kathleen. Her sister died this year in January. She was 102 years old. Mary is the last of her siblings. She has very fond memories of her time spent in the military. She loves being an American. She loves her country dearly and is grateful for the freedoms we share thanks to the many sacrifices dutiful men and women have made over the history of our Nation.

Our chaplain, Casey Ingold, and social worker, Mindy Taylor, cared for a patient with severe Alzheimer’s disease. We will call her Ms V.  Ms V had a fun personality and was beloved not only by her family, but also by the staff at the facility who cared for her. On one of her social work visits, Mindy took Ms V. to the facility’s courtyard. Ms V plucked a rose from a bush and began pulling petals off the bloom. With each petal she plucked and dropped, she said the name of a family member. Given her dementia, remembering and verbalizing her family members’ names was fairly remarkable. Not long after this visit, Ms V passed away. Casey was asked to perform Ms V’s funeral and relayed this story to her family, who found comfort in knowing that even in the depths of dementia, as she neared death, Ms V’s thoughts were of them. Casey and Mindy had the idea of placing a bench and a rose bush at the facility in memorial of Ms V. They will place a small plaque and her family will be invited to join them and the facility in remembering Ms V and her love of her family showing through a rose.
