Listen, I like a checklist as much as the next guy, but I can't stand how caught up in goal writing people get! At the end of the day, an IEP goal needs to be easy to understand, easy to measure, focused on the student's strengths and needs, and cognizant of the grade level standards. If a stranger can read the goal, know how the instruction should be delivered, and be able to set up a progress monitoring system for it, it's likely a good goal. We can this the Stranger Test.

The IEP process is meant to be collaborative, with parents playing a key role in decision-making. If parent input is not being valued or the team is dismissive of your concerns, it may indicate that the meeting is not focused on creating a plan tailored to the child’s needs. The IEP should be developed during the meeting, with input from all team members, including you. My best advice to parents is to communicate, communicate, and communicate! I've built communication templates for you. They're in the IEP Binder. Get started here: https://lnkd.in/gMC_BgcP

🌟 [Episode 194] Tried and True Tips for Dealing With School Anxiety 🌟 There are two types of kids—those excited to go back to school and those who aren’t! 🏫✨ While it's important to hold space for all emotions around school attendance, society doesn’t always make kids experiencing school refusal feel "normal." Imagine if the #1 question asked in August was, "Are you feeling kinda blah about going back to school?" 😕 Instead, we always hear about their "excitement" for the school year. This alone has sparked a lot of anxiety in our house over the years. So today, I’m sharing tips that have helped the Barlow kids and many of my clients with school anxiety—both at the beginning of the year and throughout. One such tip came to mind during one of Jack's school refusal episodes and has been a game-changer for years. I hope these tips help your family too, as I know how challenging it can be to support a child with anxiety! 💛✨ #SchoolAnxiety #BackToSchool #ParentingTips #MentalHealthMatters #SchoolRefusal #AnxietySupport #ParentingCommunity #AshleyBarlowCo #TheCommunityLab 🚀 Tune in to Episode 194 for all the details! 🚀

The time to start thinking about the Transition to Adulthood is Yesterday. Womp womp! I'm so sorry! In this episode I'll scare the socks off of you... Just kidding! But we'll talk about things to *think* about NOW, no matter you child's age, which will help you prepare them for adulthood. You'll hear a story about my own dinner table that prompted the idea for this episode, too! Listen now on your fave podcast platform!

The Special Education & Advocacy Lab is an on-line, on-demand training course for parents of children on special education that are interested in improving their advocacy at the IEP table. Each of the ten modules is a little under an hour, so in about 6.5 hours – less than one work day – or a few weeks’ time we go start to finish in Special Education Advocacy. We cover Parent Rights and the nuts and bolts of the IEP Meeting, the basics of the law, a deep dive into the IEP document and goal writing, progress monitoring and specially designed instruction, due process, document organization, communication strategies and so much more! Each module is jam packed with content and collaborative, reasonable, objective advocacy tips.
