Data teams often get labeled as cost centers. They’re overwhelmed by requests, generating reports that don’t impact revenue. So, the question is; why isn’t your internal data team driving business growth? Here are 5 steps I’ve seen work to make that shift: 1. Automate Low-Level Requests: Free up your data team from repetitive tasks like adhoc requests. Automation can save 20+ hours a week, giving them time to focus on strategy. 2. Capture Semantic Knowledge: Important insights often stay locked in your team's heads. Implement systems that document this knowledge, making it accessible to everyone and speeding up decision-making. 3. Provide Real-Time Insights: Move beyond static reports. Equip your team with tools that allow stakeholders to ask questions in real time and get actionable answers instantly. 4. Align Data with Business Goals: Make sure your data team understands business priorities. The more their work is tied to outcomes, the easier it is to show their impact on revenue. 5. Shift from Reactive to Proactive: Encourage your data team to deliver insights before they’re asked. Proactively identifying growth opportunities helps them become seen as strategic partners. By implementing these steps, your data team can evolve from cost center to profit driver. ---- If this resonates with you, let’s connect. We're specifically building Kater.ai (YC W24) as a solution to all five of the above, and our pilot program kicks off in 2 weeks. A few spots remain—reach out if you're interested.
