November's #ImageoftheMonth features graphene captured using scanning tunneling microscopy! It is part of the research being conducted at Ames National Laboratory at Iowa Statue University by Pat Thiel and Michael Tringides. They are investigating the unique properties of 2D materials and metals grown on graphene, graphite, and other carbon-coated surfaces. “Graphene has gained a lot of enthusiastic attention in both scientific research and the tech industry because electrons travel very fast along its surface,” explained Tringides. The upcoming International Thermal Spray Conference (#ITSC2025), taking place from May 5–8, 2025, in Vancouver, Canada, represents a premier opportunity for sharing and advancing technical knowledge across our Thermal Spray global community. To recognize excellence in this field, we’re once again presenting awards for outstanding papers submitted to the conference. We invite professionals with technical expertise in Thermal Spray to serve on the judging panel, whether through research or extensive experience. Membership in ASM-TSS is not required—just a passion for the field and an eye for innovation. The technical background of potential judges will be evaluated for qualifications before being accepted.
