By championing STEM education from an early age, companies can foster a new generation of skilled workers and enhance current employee satisfaction and loyalty by supporting employee-mentors in the classroom. In Industry Today Media, read more from ASME's Manager of K-12 Programs Patti Jo Rosenthal on how ASME and Discovery Education are working together to inspire students and professional engineers through programs such as Career Connect: https://lnkd.in/eyPF6-UZ

Many traditional assistive devices are made of rigid materials, making them functional but uncomfortable for the wearer. That's why a team of interdisciplinary researchers from Nanyang Technological University Singapore took inspiration from pangolins, armadillos, and fish to develop a new type of fabric, called RoboFabric, that can harden and soften with the push of a button. While biomedical devices and soft robotics are the most obvious applications, there's potential for RoboFabric to be used in helmets or braces for sport, or in heavy industry, where some workers already use exoskeletons to help save energy and reduce fatigue. In conjunction with Climate Week NYC, on this episode of “Unconventional Engineering” I had a great discussion with my colleagues Sean Bradshaw and Timo Márquez, the Chair and Vice-Chair of the ASME Committee on Sustainability, who shared their perspective on the role of the Committee in contributing to the climate action landscape, as well as the role engineers play in the long-term goals to foster sustainability worldwide. Giving back to the community is a big part of many of our employees' lives. This #HispanicHeritageMonth, our Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Achievement (HOLA) Employee Resource Group (ERG) put together a back-to-school supply drive to support students in need in the NYC area. Supporting Good Sheperd Services' Backpack Drive, the HOLA ERG gathered donations from ASME staff using shopping lists on several e-commerce sites. Once the supplies were delivered to NYC, members of HOLA gathered to fill the backpacks and send them off to students. We're proud of the hard work put forth by the team to ensure that students have the necessary tools to succeed this academic year!
