"When you are a hammer, everything is a nail" in the development context could be "when you are a capital provider, everything is an access to finance problem." Here is why I think that isn't quite right and why the non-financial services side of ANDE member's work is so much harder than it should be.

Really enjoyed my time at the Growth Summit hosted by Center for Global Development, Growth Teams, and Charter Cities Institute last week. Having reflected on it a bit I think there are two big takeaways: 1) Its genuinely absurd that the case for growth as critical for building a better world still needs to be made explicitly. I think this is evidence that the development sector has lost the plot a bit amid the SDGs and forgotten that there is no human development progress that can be sustained without a growing economy. 2) In this growth world of economists and government policymakers, there is far too little engagement with entrepreneurship actors who put skin and bones on the concepts of firm productivity, trade facilitation, capital flows etc. I remain convinced that the single biggest missing piece of economic development is the subsidy required to sustain an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Rich countries have university endowments, high net worth individuals, corporate partners, philanthropic foundations. Low and middle income countries have a funding gap that development agencies ought to fill for entrepreneurship support organizations to deliver a pipeline of entrepreneurs who will grow the economy of the future. What are your thoughts about SDGs distracting us from the need for economic growth? Have we lost the plot?
