"Is Dad Losing Weight?" When Sarah visited her father, Walter, last month, she noticed something troubling. Walter, who lived alone, seemed more frail than usual. His once vibrant presence was now subdued, and his clothes hung loosely on his frame. Worried, Sarah asked him... “Dad, are you losing weight?” Walter shrugged, his appetite dwindling in the face of his chronic diabetes and a recent diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer’s. Managing his diabetes meant a strict diet, and the Alzheimer’s made cooking and eating a challenge. Meals became a hassle, and Walter often skipped them or settled for whatever was easiest. Sarah started paying closer attention. She realized Walter's kitchen was stocked with convenience foods that lacked essential nutrients. Even though Walter wasn’t starving, his chronic conditions had impacted his ability to maintain a balanced diet. The problem wasn't just hunger but the difficulty in managing his meals amidst his health issues. One day, Sarah found a concerning statistic: 65 percent of older adults in hospitals face malnutrition. Her father’s frequent hospital visits and his current state made the numbers hit home. Determined to help, Sarah arranged for Walter to visit with Senior Living Advisor Tom Carabellese to explore ways to see that Walter was getting the nutritional support he needed. They worked on a plan to ensure Walter received balanced, nutritious meals suited to his health needs, and social interaction as well. Slowly, Walter began to regain some strength, and Sarah noticed his smile also returned. Sarah's story highlights how older adults living alone are at risk of malnutrition, not just from lack of food, but from isolation and complex health challenges (including depression) that make maintaining good nutrition difficult. #SeniorNutrition #SeniorIsolation #SeniorDepression

In-home care provides seniors the comfort of their own homes, preserving independence and routines with personalized care. It fosters emotional support by keeping them close to family. However, it can lead to social isolation and requires significant effort to manage. Assisted living on the other hand offers a supportive community environment with various amenities and activities, aiding in daily tasks and promoting socialization. It facilitates making new connections and feeling a sense of belonging. Consider the following points when deciding between in-home care and assisted living: 1. Safety of the senior. 2. Access to necessary care. 3. Ability to manage daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medication. 4. Social opportunities and interactions. If you need assistance in making this decision, don't hesitate to contact our senior care advisors. They're here to help you navigate the unique needs of your loved one.
