Hi all, sharing a free virtual opportunity happening this month! It's a 3-session workshop I helped coordinate, put on by The Associated Press and BOYD'S STATION. First session is tomorrow night at 7 pm ET, the others are at the same time Oct. 14 & 16. Register here: https://lnkd.in/g5j5DXZ7 Boyd's Station is a nonprofit organization based in rural Kentucky where I did a fellowship in 2021. They provide funding, housing and mentorship for young writers and photographers to pursue their craft in an area that previously didn't get much media coverage. It was really a transformative experience for my career and now I help them out with recruiting and program development as a volunteer because I'm passionate about what they do. This is a great chance to deepen reporting skills, ask questions of AP reporters and learn about the programs Boyd's Station offers. Hear from my awesome colleagues Michael Phillis, Isabella O’Malley, Joshua Bickel, Brittany Peterson, Mary Katherine Wildeman and Dorany Pineda. This will be a highly discussion-based workshop, so come with your questions! Session 1 will cover some science basics from reading studies to dealing with climate disinformation. We’ll also talk about rural reporting and the value of door knocking. Session 2 will be focused on how to think visually about stories with photos & video, and how writers & visual journalists collaborate to make the best story possible. Session 3 will explore how to use data to approach stories and how that can be applied to climate, ag & rural reporting topics. We’ll also talk about the importance of bilingual reporting and why community rapport is so important. #journalism #environment #workshop #associatedpress #boydsstation #writing #photography #video #datareporting #professionaldevelopment #reporting #climatechange #ruralissues

At New York Climate Week, the "Save Her! Environmental Drag Show" was a popular event. It featured performers like Pattie Gonia, a drag queen who wants to use joy and laughter to give the climate movement a makeover. The show blends dance, humor, and outfits made of reused clothing to highlight urgent climate issues. But don’t call Pattie Gonia an "influencer." As she told The Associated Press, the term diminishes the real impact that artists can have in raising awareness and driving change. Read more on today's AP Climate Watch ➡

LOOKING FOR VOICES: Are you itching to get that pumpkin spice latte before Labor Day? What about eggnog before Thanksgiving? I am working on a story about how consumers are eager to get to the next season earlier and earlier and how retailers and casual food chains are now changing up the calendar. Would love to get real people. . Please email me:adinnocenzio@ap.org by end of the day today The Associated Press

An investigation focused on three of the world’s largest shrimp producers claims that as big Western supermarkets make windfall profits, their aggressive pursuit of ever-lower wholesale prices is causing misery for people on the bottom end of the supply chain. JD Vance once criticized a bipartisan 2021 law that invested billions in America’s crumbling infrastructure. He called it a “huge mistake” that spent taxpayer dollars on “really crazy stuff.” But the first-term Ohio senator and Republican vice-presidential nominee has still sought more than $200 million in funding through the law. The All Things Go music festival made its way to New York City this weekend for the first time, featuring a lineup of predominantly women and queer women headliners like Boygenius’ Julien Baker, Ethel Cain, Muna, Janelle Monae and Reneé Rapp. It directly reflects the current popularity of music made by queer women in contemporary pop music. Judaism’s High Holy Days annually provide an emotional mix of celebration, introspection and atonement for Jews worldwide. This year, for many, the emotions will be extraordinarily powerful, given that the midpoint of the 10 days spanning Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur is Oct. 7. That's the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and triggered the still-ongoing war in Gaza. Read the full story here: https://buff.ly/3N72FWP
