As of this week, the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment (A4) is now an interest group of Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC)! The Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment (A4) is excited to announce its forthcoming integration into the global professional organization, the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). Beginning Tuesday, 3 September 2024, A4 will become a SETAC Interest Group, with a slight change to our name – the Advancement and Application of Alternatives Assessment Interest Group (SETAC A4 IG). SETAC Interest Groups provide a vital forum for professionals to collaborate and to advance scientific topics of interest to the SETAC society. The SETAC A4 IG plans to continue to strengthen alternatives assessment (AA) methods and practice, including its use in policy, and to engage industry, government and academic professionals interested in using or performing AA to advance the identification and adoption of safer alternatives. Please consider attending the SETAC North America 45th Annual Meeting from 20–24 October 2024 in Fort Worth, Texas. Last week the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment (A4) hosted a special session on the connections between alternatives assessment and the emerging field of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) at the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe Annual Meeting. Both are critical to the design, evaluation, and adoption of safer, more sustainable chemicals. While one is focused on responding to increasing regulatory and market demands for safer chemistry, the other helps shape the design and application of solutions where safer alternatives may not exist today. Both require better collaboration between chemists and engineers with environmental and health scientists. And both need policies that support innovation, adoption, and scale of more sustainable solutions - which is of critical importance to Change Chemistry (formerly Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3)).
