Highlights of the Day: - Final Inspections: Our team conducted thorough final inspections to ensure every aspect of the homes met the standards of comfort, safety, and quality. - Paperwork Completion: We guided the new homeowners through the final paperwork, clarifying details and ensuring a seamless transition. - Key Handover: The day concluded with a memorable moment as we handed over the keys to two very happy and much-deserving families. Covenant House Alaska is getting ready for their Annual Sleep Out event, which raises funds to support young Alaskans experiencing homelessness. Sadly, more than half of the young people Covenant House supports are Alaska Native. These young people finding their way to Anchorage from across the state are shareholders and Tribal members from Southeast, the Interior, Northwest Alaska, and the Aleutians. They are Iñupiat and Haida and Yupik and Unangax̂. Several of our friends at COOK INLET HOUSING AUTHORITY and Cook Inlet Lending Center, Inc. AK|269839 are participating in Sleep Out this year, giving up their beds for a night to help youth facing homelessness find safe shelter and loving care. That care includes essential services like education, job training, medical care, mental health counseling, and legal aid — everything they need to build independent, sustainable futures. We are excited to announce that applications are NOW OPEN for TYPE 3 (Program Development and Implementation) grants with the Thriving Communities Program. These grants are for up to $350,000 and will cover a two-year project period. Applicants will already have a strong understanding of the local environment and/or public health issues and are ready to implement. But who is eligible? Nonprofit organizations, community-based organizations, tribal governments, and Native American organizations are all eligible—note that this list is not exhaustive. We are grateful to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) for hosting our fall Board meeting this week at their Department of Environmental Health and Engineering. Members enjoyed presentations by Jackie Qatalina Schaeffer, Sr. Director of Climate Initiatives, and Charissa Williar, Sanitation Facilities Program Director. A highlight was hearing about the AVCP Regional Housing Authority’s innovative partnership with ANTHC to stand up a climate initiatives division within their own organization. Safe, quality, affordable housing is a climate asset and public health imperative. We are keeping the families impacted by the severe flooding in Kotzebue yesterday in our thoughts. Water levels rose between 2-4 feet above the normal high tide line and came 30 feet further inland, driven by 35-mph winds gusting up to 55 mph. Eighty people were evacuated and several homes were damaged. Critical infrastructure operations were disrupted. Such storms are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, as warm air holds more moisture than cold air. The federal government issued two disaster declarations for floods in 2000. So far this year, it has issued 66. More than ever before, investing in increasing the supply of safe, resilient, affordable housing is one of the most important climate actions we can take. Kasigluk, AK – AVCP Regional Housing Authority (RHA) administration recently traveled by boat to Kasigluk for a community walk-through and discussions regarding the potential development of 72 lots near the village. The visit allowed AVCP-RHA to see the area firsthand and hear valuable input from tribal members. Through collaboration, it was determined that once road access is established, the future is promising for expansion and new home development on a solid foundation. We thank Kasigluk’s tribal leadership for their warm welcome and partnership. Your insights will greatly contribute to addressing housing needs in the community.
