AURA enables astronomical discovery and promotes broad engagement in exploring the Universe.
About us
The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is a consortium of 47 US institutions and 3 international affiliates that operates world-class astronomical observatories for the National Science Foundation and NASA. AURA’s role is to establish, nurture, and promote public observatories and facilities that advance innovative astronomical research. In addition, AURA is deeply committed to public and educational outreach, and to diversity throughout the astronomical and scientific workforce. AURA carries out its role through its astronomical facilities. AURA is responsible for the successful management and operation of its three centers: NSF’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab); the National Solar Observatory (NSO); and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI).

Kudos to the team at the International Gemini Observatory on 25 years of incredible discoveries! Reflecting on the profound educational impact of the Gemini North telescope on the Hawaiʻi community is truly inspiring. #AstronomyEducation #PublicOutreach #GeminiObservatory #SpaceScience #Gemini25Years
🎉We continue to celebrate 25 years of discovery for the International Gemini Observatory, operated by NSF NOIRLab! 🔭✨ Today we are reflecting on the educational impact that Gemini North telescope has brought to the Hawaiʻi community🌴. ⏳Over the years we have been deeply involved in public education through diverse programs ranging from teacher training to engaging public events aimed to enhance public engagement and share secrets of the Universe discovered at Gemini with people of all ages. 👀Check out these pictures of some of our public outreach events, including the 20th anniversary of Journey through the Universe🚀, our premier astronomy education and outreach program in Hawaiʻi. Congratulations to Evan Pascual and the National Solar Observatory team for their innovative approach to "Astronomy Communication in a Hybrid World"! #AstronomyCommunication #HybridWorld #SolarEclipse2024 #NSO #ScienceOutreach
The 2024 Communicating Astronomy with the Public (CAP) conference is underway at La Cité de l'espace in Toulouse, France! Organized by the International Astronomical Union, CAP is the only large-scale, international conference for astronomy communication and brings together science communicators, educators, and other creative personalities. Under this year's theme, "Astronomy Communication in a Hybrid World," NSO's Communications Officer, Evan Pascual, shared a poster highlighting the NSO's outreach & communication campaign from the 2024 total solar eclipse in North America. This hybrid initiative included in-person community engagement and an online eclipse livestream co-hosted with the National Science Foundation. #IAUCAP2024

Exciting times ahead as Space Telescope Science Institute interns dive deeper into the world of space science! #SpaceScience #DataScience #JWST #STEMEducation
Our SASP interns have been busy this summer. Yesterday, they participated in a lecture series on JWST Data Analysis and Visualization Tools with our exceptional Data Scientist, Camilla Pacifici, and software engineer, Jesse Averbukh. As we know, #NASAWebb is capturing photons and transmitting data to Earth. During the lecture, Camilla and Jesse discussed intriguing scientific applications of JWST. Following this, they provided an interactive demonstration of Jdaviz, a Python open-source package designed for data analysis and visualization. #SASP2024 #SummerInternship #SpaceAstronomySummerProgram
