Ep. 47: Race in Athletic Training-A Roundtable Discussion LINK: https://lnkd.in/gGJTj5D Racism is wrong. Hate can’t be accepted. Just not being “racist” is not enough to propel change. In order to help create change, we have to listen, work to comprehend and accept the fact that those in privileged positions can never understand what diverse people go through. ATChat hasn’t put a statement out because we needed to listen and learn from people that experience racism on potentially daily basis. We denounce any form or racism or hate, not only within the athletic training community but in the world in general. We will do more to help be part of the change that is needed to increase equality and work with our diverse professionals to succeed and feel safe while doing so. This roundtable discussion on Race in Athletic Training is a starting point and we can’t think Krystal, Ryan, Mercedes, Andrew, Brandon, Susan, Mike and Austin for being a part of the conversation and education. We held this roundtable to listen, learn, and find opportunities to try and make things better. #blacklivesmatter, racism and hate are still a problem. We need to do better and look forward to the opportunities to continue the conversation and do our part to make things better.

Ep. 86: Dichotomy in AT LINK: https://lnkd.in/epV3KJbd Di’kademe/: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different. Moving to one extreme or the other can be hard to balance, especially if you try and make two seemingly opposing views/perspectives try and mix together and champion both of them. This is where dichotomy comes from and the concept that you have to find balance. There are times to be aggressive but you have to be able to double back with caution because you can’t run yourself in only one direction and then immediately make a switch. Recognizing and embracing the dichotomy of ideas is important to all professions but can have some serious implications in athletic training. It is important to recognize the wide range of differing ideas but also be able to balance those in order to be maximally effective. RE-EVAL: Ep. 123: Jen Xu-Nuance in Athletic Training LINK: https://lnkd.in/gjmMGA6b Jen Xu is a minimalist shoe enthusiast in addition to everything else she has going on. Jen is currently a PhD student at the University of Virginia, doing stand up comedy, taking care of a new puppy and writing on Medium. This discussion came up when Jen posted about the importance of the details and nuance that come with moving into minimalist shoes. This idea grew into the conversation we had about the importance of nuance in everything athletic training. In this episode we talk about many different aspects of athletic training and how nuance plays a role. We discuss because of how vast the profession is and how many different things can be effective but when it comes to making a huge difference it is in the nuance of care that is essential. We cover a lot of ground and of course, we talk about minimalist shoes and how Jen, the enthusiast she is, has seen how much nuance is important in getting people interested in the potential transition. A lot to take away from this conversation, enjoy. Ep. 175: Karen Fennell, MS, ATC -Committee on Practice Advancement (COPA) LINK: https://lnkd.in/gBHRqySk Karen Fennell is the outgoing NATA COPA chair and as much as we tried to schedule this episode before then, schedules didn’t line up. In this episode, Karen dives deep into what COPA is and their charge as a committee. She discusses the inner workings of COPA and how the committee is set up. It was interesting to hear how surprisingly large the committee is. Karen also discusses how the committee has evolved over time and adapted to the changes in the athletic training profession. Karen also makes a great point on the importance of the wording around “emerging” and “non-foundational” settings and why she chooses to use “non-foundational”. I learned a ton in this episode and have a better understanding of COPA and the NATA. Check it out. In This Episode: +What is COPA. +Managing so many areas with a large committee +The history of COPA, back to 1987. +Connect with the right people +”Non-foundational” settings Connect with Karen +FB: https://lnkd.in/ggDYK_gp +LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/gAZQ4Z9E + www.natapac.org +@: finney825@yahoo.com LINK: https://lnkd.in/g--nqdmm https://lnkd.in/eVD3Y5p www.cliniallypressed.org SUBSCRIBE: https://lnkd.in/e5aVDsY #ATCchat #ATtwitter #complicatedsimple #atimpact #at4all #nata #boc #bocatc #athletictraining #athletictrainingchat #health #medicine #medical #careeverywhere
