A woman-run, mission-driven seaweed farming company dedicated to making a powerful and positive impact.
About us
Good food should do good. Atlantic Sea Farms is a woman-run, mission-driven seaweed farming company. We are dedicated to making a powerful and positive impact on the health of our customers, our coastal communities, and our planet by creating delicious products made from regeneratively farmed sea greens. Our founders created the first commercially viable seaweed farm in the United States in 2009, with the goal of diversifying how our coastal waters are used and providing a domestic, fresh, healthy alternative to imported seaweed products. Now, more than ever, we need food sources that can positively impact the economic and environmental health of our coastal communities. Here in Maine, climate change is already making landfall, and our future depends on finding new ways for lobster fishermen to work on the water while improving the health of our oceans. Read more about our social mission to work with coastal fishermen, and meet some of our partner farmers by visiting our website.

We are honored to be a part of the Non-GMO Project's Food Integrity Collective, working together to build a better food system that supports people and planet 🌎
Food Integrity Collective cohort brand Atlantic Sea Farms does incredible work on the East Coast as a seaweed aquaculture business. Their infrastructure and path to market help keep kelp farmers in business – and that's a big deal. Kelp is a nutrient-dense superfood that is also ecologically beneficial and can help fight climate change. "ASF’s dedication to infrastructure also pays off for the consumer. When a shopper buys one of the company’s burgers, they can look up where the kelp grew, who harvested it, and when. This is a markedly different situation than with seafood writ large, where one-third of grocery store labels have been found to be wrong." We're taking a moment to shine a light on the power of Atlantic Sea Farms kelp powder– it's an extremely versatile, nutrient dense, high quality and super traceable ingredient, and we wanna talk about it! Today, we're focusing on regeneratively-farmed kelp powder for chefs, and what makes it such a fun ingredient to use in the kitchen👩🍳 🥣 Kelp Powder as an EMULSIFIER: The alginate in kelp allows for gelling to occur at lower temperatures. Kelp gels with fats/lipids and helps to keep liquids and fats from separating. It's a great plant-based, natural, delicious option for dressings and sauces that tend to break without emulsifiers. 🤤 Kelp Powder as a flavor ENHANCER: The umami quality of kelp catalyzes other flavors in your cooking, like the sweetness and savoriness in your dishes. It also helps to balance our other taste experiences. Kelp itself has distinct, beautiful, vegetal ocean notes too - perfect for bringing unique flavors to the table. 🍽️ Kelp Powder for VERSATILITY: Kelp can be incorporated into any dish, from sweet to salty. It adds depths of flavors and beautiful green colors to so many applications. Kelp can be incorporated into your baking, your raw fresh dishes, or cooking methods of any kind! Whether you're in food product development, creating menus for institutional dining, or running a restaurant kitchen, get your hands on some kelp powder and champion a superfood ingredient that supports the health of our oceans. 👉 DM Alissa Brockman today and learn more on our website: https://lnkd.in/dB3bb6vf #chefs #recipedevelopment #ingredients #sourcing #traceable #innovation #productinnovation #ingredientpartners #ingredientsupply #menu #recipes #regenerative #kelp #seaweed Briana Warner Matthew Haight

Have you heard? Atlantic Sea Farms is making waves in the seaweed industry, with impressive growth and impactful support for fishing families. 🐟 💙 They were featured by both Mainebiz and Global Seafood Alliance's Responsible Seafood Advocate at the beginning of this month. 🌊 Scaling Maine Seaweed: "In 2019, Atlantic Sea Farms had 13 partner farmers and a year later, its products were in less than 500 retail locations across the country. Today, the company has 40 partner farmers 18 communities, and more than 4,000 retail stores across the country carry its refrigerated and frozen products." Read more: https://lnkd.in/dkbtp9ju 🎣 Supporting Fishing Families: "The 2024 kelp harvest season paid over $1 million to fishing families experiencing volatility in the fisheries they have relied on for generations. Atlantic Sea Farms’ partner farmers now grow the largest supply of farmed seaweed in the United States." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eQcP9NBH #maine #seaweed #kelp #aquaculture

Atlantic Sea Farms, a Maine Venture Fund portfolio company, headed to Japan with a delegation to learn from the world’s leading experts in kelp farming. While Maine represents the majority of farmed seaweed in the U.S., there’s much to gain from Japan's centuries-old industry. This knowledge exchange, supported by Builders Initiative, will help sustainably scale Maine's kelp industry. In the words of our CEO, kelp really is "crazy cool" 😎 Thank you to the The Wall Street Journal for covering our work to build an entirely new, truly regenerative seaweed aquaculture industry in the US.

Did I really just say "crazy cool" in an interview with the The Wall Street Journal? Yes I did. Because I was talking about the most climate friendly food on the planet and that is pretty much the neatest thing I can think of. Atlantic Sea Farms

With our biggest kelp harvest season yet behind us, our operations and supply teams, along with a few of our partner farmers, just visited the Hakodate region of Japan, joining a crew of other U.S. delegates like Barnacle Foods , Maine Coast Sea Vegetables, Inc., Maine Sea Grant and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. We were able to meet with seaweed growers, harvesters, processors, as well as scientists and chefs to take a deep dive into all aspects of the industry. The U.S. farmed seaweed industry is relatively young, and going to Japan to learn from experts behind the generations-old, thriving commercial seaweed production was an invaluable experience (plus - we enjoyed lots of KELP soft serve🍦). Looking ahead towards the next cultivation season, we’re feeling so motivated to continue growing the domestic seaweed aquaculture industry, increasing the opportunities for fishing families to adapt to climate change while supporting the health of our oceans. This trip was made possible through a generous tech transfer grant and support from CEI (Coastal Enterprises, Inc.) and Builders Initiative.
