Atrium Health is mobilizing its MED-1 mobile hospital to Tryon, NC, in response to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene. Activated by the state, MED-1 will serve as a receiving hospital to triage, treat, and transfer patients as needed. MED-1 is the world’s first mobile emergency department of its kind, ready for deployment within 24 hours and operational within just a few hours of arrival. With digital x-ray, ultrasound, lab services, pharmacy, 14 acute care beds, and a 2-bed operating room, it brings comprehensive care directly to disaster sites. The unit is self-sustaining for up to 72 hours and consists of nearly a dozen vehicles, including essential medical and support trailers. Our dedicated team of health care professionals—nurses, doctors, trauma surgeons, paramedics, IT specialists and support staff—will be on-site and behind-the-scenes to ensure that patients receive the same high standard of care found at our fixed hospitals. Chief Executive Officer at Advocate Health

I know I speak for many Advocate Health teammates when I share that our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. While our facilities in the Southeast experienced some minor disruptions, including power loss, leaks and delayed openings, we are grateful that most have been quickly addressed.    However, our commitment extends far beyond our walls. We are currently working as part of a healthcare preparedness coalition with other health systems, lending our support to the hardest-hit areas – especially in western North Carolina – where entire towns are still submerged. Despite roadblocks and flooding from the storm, we have already evacuated over 70 patients (and counting) from impacted areas by ambulance, plane and helicopter and have transported them for care to our hospitals in Charlotte and Winston-Salem. We have also deployed our MED-1 advanced mobile hospital to the western part of the state and will be expanding our hospital at home program to provide critical and life-saving care for those who need it most. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones and the many who remain missing. We know the road to recovery will be long, but together, we stand ready to support our communities as they rebuild and heal.

As we continue to witness the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene and the aftermath of the storm, our hearts are heavy for the loss of life and the devastated communities. We are keeping those impacted top of mind and have initiated support. Our mobile medicine teams have made dozens of trips to transport patients and deliver supplies – via our Atrium Health MedCenter Air and Wake Forest Baptist AirCare air ambulance teams, as well as with our ambulances on the ground. We expect our MED-1 mobile hospital to be deployed to provide much-needed medical services in the disaster area. Additionally, Atrium Health Georgia EMS is assisting with search and rescue missions, transporting patients and answering emergency calls. Our organization and our teammates are committed to providing immediate and long-term disaster response and recovery for our communities. Dr. David Rice of Atrium Health Union has performed his 1,000th robotic surgery, a reflection of our dedication to cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures. Dr. Rice first joined Atrium Health in 2014, where he began exploring robotic surgery. After a brief departure, he returned in 2019, joining Atrium Health Union general surgery and diving deeper into robotic procedures. “Robotic surgery allows me to offer my patients the best in precision and recovery, and it's incredible to see how far we’ve come in advancing this program,” says Dr. Rice. Since launching the robotic surgery program in 2016, we've surpassed over 2,000 robotic procedures. We're proud to be at the forefront of health care innovation, providing patients with enhanced surgical care.

Meet Hannah, a physical therapist at Carolinas Rehabilitation-Wendover Pediatrics. Her passion for physical therapy stems from a knee injury she obtained while playing varsity volleyball. While healing, she became fascinated with body mechanics and injury prevention. “From the age of 17, I knew I wanted to become a physical therapist,” she shared. Hannah joined Atrium Health as a rehabilitation tech at Carolinas Rehabilitation-Wendover Pediatrics and eventually began a clinical rotation at Atrium Health Union. “That experience completely changed the trajectory of my PT career aspirations,” she reflected. In 2016, she graduated with her DPT from Wingate University. Hannah then joined Atrium Health Cabarrus as an acute care physical therapist, where she embraced the opportunity to learn in various hospital settings — a foundation that continues to inform her work in pediatrics today. Hannah manages clinic operations, optimizes patient schedules and provides essential support for her team. She is also part of the Atrium Health Concussion Team and the Pediatric Task Force, working to streamline pediatric care pathways and support other pediatric therapists through mentorship and evidence-based practice. Hannah finds joy in daily interactions with her patients. “The resiliency of children is truly inspiring,” she says. “I have the privilege of being a part of a child's journey, and I get to help their parent or caregiver feel supported as well.” Atrium Health has progressed Hannah’s career through various professional development opportunities, including in-service presentations, continuing education and involvement in specialty groups that foster clinical mentorship and collaboration. As for her long-term career goals, Hannah aims to grow her vestibular and concussion caseload and expand pediatric specialty programs, including serial casting, aquatic therapy and potentially starting an intensive therapy program. Outside of work, she enjoys staying active, exploring new spots around Charlotte, hiking, cheering on the Appalachian State football team and spending time with family and friends.

Cancer survivorship is a journey that requires support for life 💙 For the first time, the supportive oncology teams at Atrium Health Levine Cancer hosted “Journey through Survivorship” events in Charlotte and Winston-Salem bringing together survivors, providers and caregivers to talk about a holistic approach to care. It’s an opportunity to build community and provide support for survivors and their families to help them live fuller lives during their cancer journey and beyond. Thank you to everyone who participated and made these events such a success. Together, we are building a stronger, more supportive community for all those affected by cancer.
