There are seven whooping crane chicks, who aren't so little anymore, that are being reared at Audubon Species Survival Center! Five of these chicks are slated to go to White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area for release later this year, while the other two are more genetically valuable and will remain at Audubon Species Survival Center to become part of the breeding flock. With the support of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Chevron, and other generous supporters, we’re committed to the long-term growth and stability of the whooping crane population to save the species from extinction.

“We have what we’re calling our Big Five, which are dinosaurs ranging from 20 to 45 feet tall," said Daine Appleberry, senior VP and managing director of Audubon Zoo. “You’ll be able to see one as you’re walking into the Zoo, another from the elephant overlook, and another from the carousel area, all drawing you in.” via NOLA.com

Meet Basil, a female green aracari chick who needed a little helping hand from her keepers. After concerns that first-time parents Olive (mom) and Sage (dad) weren't properly looking after their chick, keepers decided to intervene and hand-rear this precious youngster to ensure her survival. Find out from Senior Bird Keeper Gina about the somewhat unique way the Bird team has been caring for this precious chick.

Meet Doug and Patty, the newest residents of Audubon Aquarium's Amazon Rainforest habitat! Doug and Patty are a breeding pair of violet turacos, who are obsessed with eating blueberries and grapes. Fun fact: the magenta/red color of the flight feathers of most turacos is actually a pigment that is only found almost exclusively in turacos, called turacin. Come visit Audubon Aquarium and see if you spot this gorgeous pair!
