The Safer Compounding in Hospitals Act, introduced by U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA), is an important step toward enhancing patient safety through automated sterile compounding and advances our Autonomous Pharmacy vision for zero-error medication management. The Autonomous Pharmacy Advisory Board joins with ASHP and the THRIV Coalition in supporting this significant legislation.

Earlier this year, the Autonomous Pharmacy Advisory Board published its first Metrics Catalog, a qualitative and quantitative approach to measuring progress in advancing along the the 5-level framework that is at the core of the Autonomous Pharmacy vision. What does the future of pharmacy look like? Jay Patel, PharmD, Clinical Informatics Fellow, shared the poster session “Augmenting Pharmacy Workflow with AI: Prototype Development and Evaluation of a Policy Chatbot for Routine and Institution-Specific Drug Information Questions” at this week’s #ASHPFutures24. In collaboration with mentors from the Autonomous Pharmacy Advisory Board, Dr. Patel’s research explored: - How an AI-augmented chatbot could improve pharmacists' information retrieval of hospital pharmacy policies using AI techniques like Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and Prompt Engineering. - Evaluations of chatbot responses, showing high scores in context precision, recall, and faithfulness, with positive feedback from pharmacists. - The potential for a chatbot prototype to automate pharmacy workflow, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care. Congratulations to Autonomous Pharmacy Advisory Board Vice Chair, Nilesh Desai, and his team at Baptist Health, on the grand opening of their new 102,000 sq. ft. Central Pharmacy Services Center, the realization of their journey to the Autonomous Pharmacy. Several industry business partners engaged with Baptist Health to support the technology infrastructure for medication management for all nine hospitals across Kentucky and Indiana.
