A recent report from Trilliant Health reveals that as national health spending surged from $2.8 trillion in 2012 to $4.5 trillion in 2022 and is expected to grow to 7.7 trillion by 2032, expectancy remains stagnant, and chronic conditions like diabetes, obesity, and behavioral health issues are on the rise. This places payers in a unique position to manage the impact of inflation and the rising cost of drugs and treatments for chronic conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases, while also proactively addressing the desired use criteria for their members. In Avalon’s 2024 Lab Trend Report, our experts analyze the current trend and explain how leveraging lab values and derived insights is helping providers and health plans align effective value-based care approaches earlier in the patient journey, optimize reimbursement models, and improve outcomes across the care continuum. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. and a significant driver of healthcare costs for both Medicare and commercial insurers. As many patients remain unaware of their condition until the disease has progressed to later stages, early detection through lab test values, rather than relying solely on claims data, has provided a more effective approach to identifying undiagnosed or unstaged CKD patients, guiding earlier intervention and treatment, ultimately reducing costs and slowing disease progression. In a recent Healthcare IT News article, Avalon’s Dr. Julie Schulz, MD, MPH, shares how adopting targeted interventions and aligning physician incentives based on performance metrics derived from lab values can not only assist health plans in improving patient care but also contain the rising costs associated with CKD.
