Using a simple surface texture, we were able to achieve a 2.2x increase in bond strength over natural gray parts! While getting maximum strength is great, and necessary for some applications, this also increases the margin of error in the bonding process. It may be possible to use half the amount of glue, while getting the necessary mechanical properties for your glued joint. Combining 3D printed parts into a larger assembly can be done for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, parts are too large for the required technology, or multiple materials need to be combined in a single part with no fasteners. Bonding is a quick solution for this. To improve the bond strength of these joints, we tested surface textures from nTopology using our Mark-10 Corporation load frame. PA12 parts were printed on the HP 3D Printing MJF platform and bonded together using Henkel HY4070. This is our go-to adhesive solution for AM parts. An equal amount of glue was applied to each pair of parts, and the parts were allowed to cure for over 24 hours before testing. Raw gray parts had the lowest average force of only 365LbF, followed closely by dyed black parts at 465LbF.
