The other day at Abule Oja community in Lagos State, hundreds of its residents got to benefit from the ongoing medical Outreach by AXA Mansard Health Limited. These residents had access to free health checkups, after which mosquito nets were given to each of the participants. As a brand, we are committed to advocating for total wellness for everyone and this program is another proof of that.

Rashidat Adebisi, the Chief Client Officer (CCO) of AXA Mansard Plc, has encouraged accounting professionals to embrace and develop competencies for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Reporting. She noted that ESG is more than before, integral to business operations; hence, accounting and finance professionals must embrace it to drive healthy and sustainable business growth. She made this known recently when she honoured an invitation by ACCA Zambia to address accounting professionals in Nigeria and Zambia on ESG Reporting. Adebisi, also the chairperson of ACCA Nigeria Advisory Council, noted that ESG has become necessary in the face of a rapidly changing business environment. She explained that ESG enhances brand reputation, increases investor appeal, and engenders customer loyalty; therefore, accounting professionals' roles now require weaving ESG into the organizational fabric. "Finance and its professionals are strategic pillars in the continued well-being of any business. Therefore, ensuring that we have a thriving world where businesses can serve their socio-economic purposes will continue to be an integral part of the accounting functions. ESG is that universally adopted framework that sits at the intersection of having a sustainable world and a thriving business environment".   "It drives organizations towards improved transparency and accountability, risk management, regulatory compliance, and stakeholders' trust," she affirmed. Using AXA as a case study, she explained that the company's ESG strategy is built on the premise that a sustainable world is an insurable world. “So globally and in Nigeria, we pay huge attention to how our operations impact the environment, people, and how we conduct our business. This is well documented in our sustainability roadmap”. "However, not all organizations have the same level of ESG maturity. So, what is important is that as accounting professionals, we recognize that it is important to our business functions and start. It is a journey and not a destination. ESG will continue evolving in line with the business environment, and new realities will continue challenging existing frameworks and strategies". “Wherever you are on the journey, what is important is that you establish a clear ESG strategy that aligns with your business ambitions, identify your unique material issues, select a preferred framework, gather and analyze data, and integrate the data into your financial reports. Once you integrate, the next thing is to ensure that you establish regulatory compliance, develop your report, engage stakeholders, then monitor and improve”.   She noted that despite the importance and benefits of ESG, the practice will not be without headwinds. She identified a lack of awareness, limited regulatory frameworks, inadequate management systems, resource constraints, and limited technology as some of the challenges that may slow the adoption of ESG reporting.

Chief Client Officer at AXA Mansard

Yesterday, I had the honour of sharing insights about #ESG Reporting with professionals from Zambia and Nigeria. Many thanks to @ACCAZambia for inviting me to share the platform with eminent professionals like @BabajideIbironke and @JohnSakala. I enjoyed the robust discussions; but what I enjoyed more is how the session once again, echoed the integral role of accounting professionals in entrenching ESG into the organizational fabric. Finance and its professionals are strategic pillars in the continued wellbeing of any business. Therefore, ensuring that we have a thriving world where businesses can serve its socio-economic purposes will continue to be an integral part of the accounting functions. #ESG is that universally adopted framework that sits at the intersection of having a sustainable world and a thriving business environment. At AXA, our sustainability strategy is built on the premise that a sustainable world is an insurable world. So globally and back home in Nigeria, we pay huge attention to how our operations impact on the environment, on people and how we conduct our business. This is well documented in our #Sustainability roadmap. If you don’t have a roadmap like AXA or other corporations who are maturing in ESG, no worries! What is important is that you start today. ESG reporting is not a destination, it’s a journey we must all embark and we’re all going to be at different stages in that journey. The ACCA global website has valuable resources that can get you started on this journey. I’ll round this off with a statement by former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, who once noted that “Business cannot succeed in societies that fail”.
