In case some Jersey folks are wondering why the U.S. and State flags are flown at half-staff today—Sunday—it's in recognition of my father’s outstanding contributions to the state, despite his unimaginable circumstances. To me, he was simply a great dad who was always there for me and my family.
I’m so grateful that he found my mom, married her, and decided to raise us in Scotch Plains. We had such a wonderful childhood, never really worrying about anything. Life was easy, and Dad always provided for us. He was the dad, landscaper, roofer, car mechanic, coach, handyman, husband, brother, friend, mentor, and just an all-around great human being who spent his life fighting for equality and equal access for everyone.
While he wasn’t much of a cook and had zero technology skills (and no desire to learn them, which I still don't understand), he excelled in so many other areas. Fortunately, my mom is an outstanding cook and has some tech skills to balance things out.
Dad would speak to anyone and everyone, a trait that my sister and I definitely inherited—we just can't help ourselves! 😄
Dad lived a full life, and the legacy he built, with my mom’s support, will carry on for many generations to come. RIP Dad, you are loved and will be missed by many – May 4, 1933 – Aug 2, 2024.
