Today, the DoD published Title 32 Part 170, moving CMMC 2.0 closer to finalization! As of December 15, 2024, C3PAOs can officially conduct CMMC assessments, and prime contractors can require their subcontractors to complete third-party assessments. The phased implementation begins with Title 48 Part 204, expected in Q1 2025. Now is the time for contractors to start or advance their NIST SP 800-171r2 implementation. Need guidance? A special committee investigation into the 2022 ransomware attack on Suffolk County, New York, revealed that years of cybersecurity mismanagement and neglect left the county vulnerable. The report highlighted failures, including outdated systems, poor coordination, and ignored warnings from cybersecurity firms and the FBI. A key failure involved bypassing firewall protections in the county clerk's office, which allowed hackers to infiltrate the network undetected. The attack disrupted essential services, leaked personal data of 500,000 residents, and cost taxpayers over $25 million. Leadership failures were identified as a primary factor in the county’s vulnerability. As the Department of Defense (DoD) prepares to implement the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), your company needs to understand Title 32 and Title 48: Title 32: Establishes the CMMC program and its ecosystem, defining cybersecurity standards for the Defense Industrial Base (DIB). Effective this December, it outlines assessment requirements and the phased rollout plan. Title 48: Defines procurement authority through DFARS, incorporating the CMMC into DoD contracts. Effective early 2025, it mandates CMMC certifications per contract level, requiring third-party assessments for levels 2 and 3. Prime contractors are already enforcing prerequisites like the SPRS score (minimum 70) for subcontractors bidding on contracts. The time to align with CMMC requirements is now.
