In five years, I see myself overseeing a well-established and efficient service department. My goal is to grow the department to 30 skilled technicians, ensuring we have the capacity to handle an increasing client base while maintaining high-quality service. North Texas Community College – 80.5 kw This picture may fool you into thinking these panels are close to the ground, when if fact the lowest point is 10-12ft tall! Back in 2010, and in it's 3rd full year in business, Axium Solar was awarded the opportunity to install an 80.5 kW solar photovoltaic system and a 2.4 kW wind turbine at the newly constructed Elizabeth Hoggatt Whatley Agricultural Complex of Northeast Texas Community College. Happy Friday! Of course it is time for our feature for #womeninconstruction - Maritza Mercado out at our project site in Corpus Christi! 1. How long have you been in construction? I have been in construction for 5 years 2. What is important to you in Construction Safety? A safe workplace is everything, we should all be able to get home just the way we arrive at work. We all have families who are waiting for us to go back home & working in a safe environment is the way to achieve that. 3. What’s your favorite color? Pink or Blue 4. What is your favorite part about being in construction? My favorite part of being in construction is that I can be a part of something that will serve for many may years.

How long have you been in construction? I've been in the construction industry for 25 years. 2. What made you get into construction safety? My dedication to safety was forged in a deeply personal tragedy when I lost a family member in a 2004 refinery incident. Learning the details of that event fueled my passion to make a difference in the construction industry. As a mother of three sons, I knew that one day, they might enter this field. This drove me to commit fully to making a difference in their lives and the lives of others. I became resolute in educating my co-workers about the critical importance of safety. By fostering a culture of vigilance and responsibility, I aim to prevent such tragedies from happening again. My goal is to instill a sense of duty in every worker, ensuring they understand that their actions can protect not only themselves but also their colleagues and loved ones. 3. What’s your favorite color?                                       My favorite color is orange. 4. What is your favorite part about being in construction? My favorite part about working in construction is being part of a diverse work family. I love that we come from different backgrounds and walks of life, united by a common goal. What truly brings me joy is knowing that I play a role in ensuring everyone goes home safely to their families each day.

I entered the construction industry because I saw an opportunity to educate myself and make significant difference for my family. I know that this field would also provide opportunities for travelling, experience new places, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Being able to work outdoors and visit different sites has not only enriched my professional skills but also allowed me to appreciate the world around me. 3. What’s your favorite color? Pink! 4. What is your favorite part about being in construction? What I love most about being in construction is that every day brings new learning opportunities. The company continually provides me with incredible experiences and growth, making each day an exciting journey. As a woman in the industry, I feel truly valued knowing that my voice and ideas are not only heard but also respected in the decision-making processes. This supportive environment empowers me to make a meaningful impact and contribute to the industry’s progress.
