About us

Blue Jay Racing is a student-run design team open to all undergraduate students. The program was founded in 2004. The team competes annually in three international events put on by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Students design, build, and race a single seat off-road vehicle against a total of ~200 teams representing 14 nations and nearly 4,000 young engineers. The award-winning program offers student engineers an educational experience that goes beyond what the classroom can offer. Aside from the technical knowledge gained, the team-based skills learned through such a rigorous endeavor develops leaders well prepared to enter industry and academia. At each competition the team competes in four of six dynamic events (Acceleration, Maneuverability, Rock Crawl, Suspension and Traction, Hill Climb and Sled Pull) as well as three static events (a sales presentation, design presentations and a cost report). To cap off the competition, the team will also race in a grueling four-hour endurance race. Team members learn as much at competition as from designing and building their vehicle throughout the rest of the year. In addition to their own learning it is also important to the team that all members participate. At competition the team is always working, whether repairing their vehicle or planning and preparing for the next day’s events. With so much to do and so little time every member contributes to the teams success.

Updates

  • As we start the competition in Williamsport, PA, we want to shout out one of our sponsors, Inertial Sense, Inc., for sponsoring our data acquisition system. This project extends the amazing Baja experience into the realms of computer science and electrical engineering. With the help of the RUG-3-IMX-5-RTK, we significantly extend our vehicle pose estimation capabilities, informing vehicle state and load determination. While not typically part of the Baja competition (yet), this level of data collection lends itself to future exploration of autonomous, self-driving vehicle operation and even more learning opportunities for students!

  • We’re currently running our Giving Tuesday fundraising! This is an opportunity to donate to the team’s educational mission and have it matched 1:1 by Johns Hopkins University.  The school graciously provides funds for shop usage and operations, but our entire vehicle budget relies on the generosity of our sponsors and donors! The team provides unmatched educational and teamwork experiences for members, and of course, Hopkins is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization for tax purposes. If interested in donating, please visit this document for instructions: https://lnkd.in/eyJzjdVE We thank you for your generosity and support of our team!

  • We would like to express our gratitude to EndMillMan.com LLC (endmillman.com) for sponsoring our end mill tooling for last year's vehicle. Because of their amazing support, we were able to manufacture our 19XT's components to the highest quality. As we move forward with the 20XT's design process, we excitedly anticipate the upcoming manufacturing phase. Thank you again to End Mill Man for making this possible!

      +1
  • We have wrapped up the 2023 season with placing 4th in dynamics, 4th in design, and 5th in statics at the BAJA SAE Ohio competition last weekend! The 19XT had a successful runtime, also achieving 6th overall averaging across all 2023 competitions: Oshkosh, Oregon, and Ohio! Thank you to SAE International, as well as American Honda Motor Company, Inc., for putting together this event, along with SAE volunteers and sponsors including Kohler Co.SolidWorks DesignerCummins Inc.HendricksonMagna InternationalNCEESPolaris Inc., and more. Our team has spent this summer beginning the design cycle of our 20XT vehicle, with everyone committing countless hours of dedication and effort to their assigned components. We are so excited to be wrapping up design and kick off manufacturing/assembling later in the year! We would like to emphasize all the effort of our Blue Jay Racing members, and extend a congratulations to the whole team's performance multitasking this competition with next year's vehicle design. Thank you to everyone who has supported Blue Jay Racing throughout the years, including faculty and staff of Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, sponsors, alumni, family, friends, and more. Your support and positive impact on the team is greatly appreciated! Once again, we are so humbled by the contributions from our team, sponsors, and event organizers to have such a wonderful conclusion to the 2023 competition season! We look forward for all that is to come with the creation of our next vehicle! Photo Credits: Matthew Bailey
