Thanks to #geneediting, we are on the brink of a new era. In this article, Jennifer Doudna discusses the transformative potential of this technology and the ethical considerations that come with it. Her insights remind us that while we’re on the frontier of innovation, we must also prioritize responsibility. What are your thoughts on balancing innovation with ethics? https://lnkd.in/gEb7K7f7

Meet your co-founder here. Yes we're doing this! And if it looks like we're copying Darren Cooke's Berkeley LSEC Speed Teaming... that's because this IS that event. Except now it is also open to people from other universities, and those who have no university affiliation. However, we are prioritizing participants from the SF Bay Area, because our goal is to generate new companies for our regional ecosystem including our #UCBerkeley incubator Bakar Labs. Looking forward to seeing some cool new companies come out of this.

It's day two of our San Francisco exploration. The morning in Silicon Valley was spent at University of California, Berkeley’s Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, where we were brought up to speed on Berkeley's expansive and impressive approach to commercialisation of research and scaling of high potential startups. During this time, we were joined by experts from several of their schools including: - Berkeley Risk and Security Lab - Berkeley Lab - Berkeley Space Center - University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business - Center for Human-Compatible AI At Plexal, we're known for convening ecosystems of startups, academics and industry around specific challenges to unlock growth and prosperity. So for us, it was really fascinating to witness how this manifests in Berkeley, a dialogue we look to continue. In the afternoon, we were greeted by the engineering and policy teams at GitHub. There, we continued the conversation about ecosystems and went one stop further, discussing how open source approaches can enable step-change capability development. Thank you to Gino Segre, Andrew W. Reddie, John Valentine, Darek DeFreece, Jon Metzler, Matt Rappaport, Rhonda Shrader, Mark Nitzberg, Leah Walker and Peter Cihon for having us. As mentioned earlier in the week, we’re hosting a social on Wednesday evening, so be sure to get in touch with Saj Huq, Bruno Sussat or Charlotte West if you'd like to catch up! #SiliconValley | #SanFrancisco | #ArtificialIntelligence | #AI | #Government | #Innovation | #EmergingTechnologies

David Baker's share of the Nobel Prize in Biology, awarded for computational protein design, emphasizes the potential for us to break free of nature's evolutionary tunnel vision and design new therapeutics. Profluent is actualizing that potential. Trained on immense datasets, Profluent's AI can optimize across multiple functional attributes, enabling intentional design of de novo proteins. This year, the company raised $35 million in a round led by Spark Capital. They made headlines, editing the human genome with OpenCRISPR-1, the world’s first AI-created and open-source gene editor -- which is free to license for ethical research and commercial use. Profluent epitomizes the big-thinking, innovative deeptech companies we want as Bakar Labs tenants, reimagining biology to make the world a better place. And they're hiring! We look forward to supporting innovators like Ali Madani and the teams they build in our incubator. Give us a boost!
